Did i miss something regarding boat damage?

So i can't work out if i missed something obvious or it's just bad luck or poor design, but sailing across an ocean and my boat just literally falls apart which leads to me drowning and dying in a location where i can't get to my body to get all my iron gear back and also lost the wishbone + many other items which basically retro grades my game back to the beginning. So my question is, how do you tell if a boat is damaged? Did i miss an indicator somewhere? Can you repair it? I feel this is a situation that should be looked at as it has made me totally stop playing due to frustration which is a shame as i was really enjoying the game. To also note I am playing solo if that matters. Cheers in advance.

The random 10 damage out of nowhere is really annoying, and it isn't caused by fish. Seems to happen more in multiplayer than in single-player, at least in my experience.

Had a glitch happen kind of like this once on a MP server.

Somehow, some way, a FISH got stuck in our longship. It wasn't actually in the longship, but dragging along just underneath and behind the rudder. We heard the kronch-kronch-kronch of impact and were looking all over to see what we were hitting. Nada. Then my bud noticed this dead fish and when we started sailing again it followed us.

We pulled to shore and repaired (barely made it, we were way out there looking for Leviathans) and it started up again as soon as we were underway. Bro had to restart the server for it to quit.

That fish really, really wanted to be a snack I guess?

I had the same experience on my friends server. My boat was taking 10 dmg every 20 seconds even in still waters. However, i didnt see the fish or something else. I kept repairing the boat but it didnt fix the problem. I had to destroy it and make a new one.

Also, you can always just pull up your hammer while you're steering and check the health of your boat. If it's getting low you should find a place to dock and set up a workbench to repair asap. As for your lost items, just use cheats to get them back. Normally I'd admonish cheating in a game you haven't beaten yet but if the game cheats you out of your gear, I see no reason why you shouldn't cheat right back at it. Just make sure to turn your dev commands off afterwards or you might go power hungry and spoil the game.

yeah you can repair it, just equip your hammer after the workstation while your on the shore. It should show you the damage same as other building pieces. I dont see why you can not build a new boat to go get your stuff? Your grave stone should be just floating there?

I built another boat and went back to the location and there is no tombstone there, there is also no death marker on the map like there usually is either.

Yea just cheat and use the server commands if you lose items to glitches. Your gear is suppose to be on top of the water when you die. You randomly switch to hammer and check the health of the ship while sailing and just go to shore and repair when the damage is more than 30%.

The main indicator is that once it drips to below 3/4 health it discolors to a slightly more greenish color.
