There is a lot in this game that shows this as a work of love. Unfortunately as someone that has been gaming since 1979, I have to say this comes off more as a game being released in 1995 not in 2023. The graphics are passable but when you get up close the textures pixelate like a criminal giving a public interview. This is not acceptable when other development companies are pushing out RTX lighting and Unreal Engine is pushing massive updates to graphics and lighting that would put this game to shame. It probably also doesn't help that this game uses the 2020 version of Unity instead of 2021LTS version. Also all of the models use low poly models -- again another decision from the 1990's. Unfortunately even before 1990 developers were using photorealistic textures, bump maps for better 3D presentation, and none of this has been used in this game. So sad. This game could be so much better.

It is primarily a construction game but construction is not that easy to do. Snap points are as loosie-goosie as Amber Heard among a group of billionaires. Instead of snapping and holding, the pieces flop everywhere. and often I'm trying to just get a connection to the MAIN snap point putting a pole on top of an installed pole, and the connections are flying everywhere. I was watching a YouTube video and his building was like mine: install a piece, swear, delete the piece, install again and pray it goes where it is supposed to go. If this happened once or twice...okay...but this was with 8 out of 10 pieces placed. This is a CONSTRUCTION game not a DESTRUCTION game. Coffee Stain Studios is your publisher, with the VERY popular Satisfactory. You should have a sitdown about graphics, animations, and construction code. You need it. I find that even when using care, when I build a long section of wall the wall pieces always end off-center. So I have to decide, do I destroy that past half hour of work or do I leave it go with the gaps and all.

The whole build up to defeating the bad guy then moving on to the next level is interesting and different. But it involved very long spans of area, ocean, and land. It would be nice to implement fast travel. At least to the players base and the offering circle. You could be halfway across the world taking out one of the bosses and then do a long, dangerous return trip to the circle. The game has quite a lot of possibility, however the developers have to take a step back and listen to the criticisms. It I had to review it now I'd say that even though I enjoy playing it I cannot recommend it.

I came over from ESO, a game that has an amazing building system. It was a bit of a dope slap trying and not succeeding in doing what I had been able to do easily for nearly 8 yrs. The snapping is miserable depending on your positioning. It's like fighting on uneven ground, hit or miss; and the free placement has never worked at all for me. I must say that it is better than No Man's Sky where throwing my monitor through a wall seems like a great idea after about 10 minutes of building.

All of that snarkiness is not to say that I don't enjoy the building and folks come up with amazing builds, usually w/ devcommands which am not interested in getting in to. I give it a solid 65%. It's better than EA launch.

You should not review it until you have iron gear.
That would let you see
portals (fast travel)
stone building
better boats
advanced crafting
a somewhat difficult boss (bonemass is the first real boss)
challenging content (swamp wet debuff, wide variety of monsters, a real step up from the first 2 easy areas)
and pretty much all the game has to offer apart from the ML magic playstyle.

that said, if you accept that the graphics are by choice and you love or hate, its gonna be this way and that fast travel exists (you should have had it before the second boss), what is left is some misunderstanding of building snap points. Sorry but the only valid complaint here is the graphics, the rest is you not playing enough and missing something somewhere. If videos on how to build are showing people struggling with simple walls, its either a joke, very very old, or an idiot. Its hard to distinguish real builds from highly modded ones as a new player, so take build screenshots with a grain of salt, but I don't mod and have built many, many really cool things. I can assure you that the pieces snap and are straight for as far as you would normally care to go -- I just did a simple bridge that was 3x the length of any normal home, and end to end all aligned. Building can be better (hoping for more rotations & other goodies) but its not broken.

First one is an opinion. It's not something that's required. The graphics are also as advertised. People can see what they're getting and I happen to find the style charming.

Second is I believe someone unable to understand the build system in this game. I've been building structures for hundreds of hours now and I do not have issues with snaps not going where they're intended. Snap in this game is pretty simple and easy to understand.

Third, Portals exist. The game has fast travel. I always bring portal materials with me when I explore so I can return instantly and boat travel can be very exciting at times while exploring new zones. It's also good to just make outposts with defended permanent portals.

As for not bringing materials through portals. That's the only real issue I see and we can mod that out. That's the great thing about mods. :P

Thanks for sharing your perspective.. the devs seem reluctant to interact with or add to the construction system in any way other than adding build pieces, even in the "Home" update, which seems a shame, because that's easily 1/4 to a 1/3 of my engagement with Valheim. I wonder if the devs intentionally withhold certain abilities or experiences from the player but I'm not sure why.

What do you think of the health/stamina/food system?

Maybe you should try your RTX card on Rimworld.
