Abomination retreat into water?

Is this normal behavior? I've killed about 7 or so abominations so far, but for whatever reason they keep retreating into deep water and submerging themselves. Is this a pathing bug? Or do they go in water to hide or something

Not quite completely true. Monsters like Abominations recover health, generally fast enough to be fully replenished within about an hour (this is what makes long term Troll Cave Dojos possible).

Its an ambulatory tree stump, not Einstein!

So it gets distracted now and again...

yeah, totally normal. One second they're hot on my heels trying to kill me... and then suddenly they've turned around and wandered off. Then they submerge and disappear. Just run around until they pop out and attack again.

The damage doesn't reset, so just keep setting them on fire with fire arrows, or lure them over surtling vents. My favorite abomination hunting area has like 8 surtling vents. It's where I go to farm coal quickly, the abominations are just the cherry on top.

After an update some time ago I started noticing several creatures, including the Abomination, go into a retreat mode when they got severely injured - but they usually turn around and come back.

I personaly like it, otherwise it would just be a different skinned Troll, and this behavior intended or not makes it stand out.
When it happened for me it had followed me to a section of meadow. It got distracted by a deer, then by a boar, and then by a neck that was swimming away. I was far enough away by then that it had lost track of me and continued farther into the water.

Yes. The first time this happened to me I got in my Karve and chased it down but when it died the drops all sank in the deep water where I couldn't retrieve them. By the time I had enough materials to make a fully upgraded set of root gear I all ready had a full set up fully upgraded iron gear.

You aren't missing much if you skip root armor ; the helm might be useful for the poison resist in the bonemass fight, and the chest against archers and such. The set bonus isn't of much use and any piece comes with vulnerability to fire making it worse than troll armor in more than a few situations.

abominations are very buggy never really a threat just move behind a tree and they will start roaming the swamp

Both the poison resistance and pierce resistance are extremely good imo. Poison just for convenience and pierce for plains enemies like deathsquittors or the fuling spear chuckers which both do a ton of damage.

Some mobs retreat when heavily wounded, presumably the abomination was putting the fire out and healing a bit.
