Issue with pausing using ESC

I had to do something else for a while, and instead of quitting the game, I just hit ESC. When I wanted to play again, about 2 hours later, I clicked CLOSE MENU, but the game did not respond, and stayed unresponsive, Memory used by the game was as normal. 20% of memory free. Is this a known issue? How long can you pause the game using ESC before this happens? I often use ESC for this, but have never paused for as long as 2 hours.
Is there anything I can do to get the game saved? If not, a couple of hours progress is lost.

Does pause work in this game? I always log out becuz the few times I tried
to use escape/pause I had an 'event' and came back to a respawned character.

Anyway check your autosaves and use the latest timestamp and matching timestamps
on the 3 files. That's the best you can do in saving locally.
Don't know about cloud saves but they most likely will load the most recent autosave.

Pause works for single player offline mode. You can't pause in multiplayer or on a dedicated server.

@OP with issue you are experiencing is usually (for me) caused by steam. For example I have Civ IV colonization on the original disks and on steam. If I play using the original disks it works flawlessly but If I pause when playing through steam it locks up 95% of the time. The same is true of Patrician III. I have the game on disk and through steam. It works flawlessly when I'm playing with the original disks but hangs up frequently when playing through steam.

Your best bet with any game played through steam that locks up is to log out instead of pause.

Pause definitely works as I use it a lot when playing. However I have noticed that sometimes if you try to pause to quickly, like as soon as u log in, just getting up from rest
etc. you won't actually be paused. When I pause I always make sure my rested buff stops counting down (you are always rested right?). Then I know for sure it's paused.

I play single player, and yes, ESC pauses everything.

I noticed something odd about pausing in single player, in that the timers for fires and torches seem to continue to tick even though the games paused. I've paused with my hearth lit. Came back still paused and it was extinguished.

Pause does work then? I guess I don't trust it.
I'd go with Knightemplar1960' 'steam issue' or 'windoz issue'..
if the windoz key works or you can start task manager you
could screw around setting either the game or steam to
'high priority' and see if that does anything but you'd
probably spend less time just shutting the computer down
and starting over.
If it's still frozen after maybe 3 hours... how about disconnecting your
internet and then reconnecting? Maybe that would nudge steam a little.
