What's the point of the treasure chests?

What exactly is the function of the treasure chests randomly generated around the world? They only seem to contain a few feathers or some gold, never anything really useful. Do any of them contain potions or meals?

It's been my experience that you can't have good crafting and good loot in the same game. One or the other is always going to be better.

Really good source of feathers early in the game.

As for the really bad ones in the mines, I'm just assuming they're like... flavor/lore/worldbuilding related. The real prize is obviously the black cores.

Chest come handy to unload the character in a "realistic" way during exploration (and skills farming sessions). You can always return to a chest to recover what you dropped inside. They allow explorers to have longer runs. Of course, outdoors you could build some by yourselves as well. Indoors, chests can make it for a secure treasure room if you don't have a base nearby or don't want to use portals (I like troll caves with two chests inside).

mmm people got threads about lack of realism. And eat sausage they found in a chest in an abandoned ruin. :O
I don't mind that its out of date. Free @home food is free. The potions, though... ?!

someting tells me the mine chest contains are PLACEHOLDERS. which would suck if they add actual new items there later on my seed is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard. i hope they arent this stupid. they would have to reset all chests if they do that.

on the other hand the only chests which really contain useful loot are the ones in mountains with onions and the ones in swamp crypts with chains and scrap iron sometimes. and i guess the village ones with Black metal but black metal is infinite anyway.

Feathers, which are annoying to farm
Junk for the vendor so you can get your strong man belt
Swamp chests drop chains, iron arrows (which are good at the time but still a waste of iron to craft), and the ones in crypts have iron ore
Onion seeds from mountain chests
Plains chests can have black metal, barley, deathsquito stingers

Yeah they are pretty useless. Never found anything i really needed, besides maybe the silver collars, with that you can build a deco treasury chest^^

I actually collected all the sausages for fun, see how long i can do with them. In the end i had almost 5 stacks, enough for like 35 hours of playtime, used them all remodeling my base and collecting materials and such. Other than that, it's a sad reward, i mean, it's sausages, i get those materials for 5 stacks in literally less than 10 minutes.

They are pretty underwhelming. 10 scrap iron in a chest in a crypt is a nice find as is finding black metal scrap in a chest in the plains. Frost arrows and onion seeds make me happy, and the one time I found a fishing pole before buying one saved me a long boat ride.

They're a little underwhelming, yes. In later biomes they will occasionally have small bunches of stuff that would otherwise take longer to obtain.

late game ones have potions, but they are the weakest tier.
mostly the point is funds. Chests are your primary source of junk that the vendor takes for cash. Funds for the vendor -- you can't get enough for a short time, then suddenly you have 2 rooms that look like scrooge mcduck was playing the game.

secondary, you must loot chests to get one type of seed for crops.

unimportant but the steady supply of arrows is an honorable mention. feathers are great too, as hunting birds is tedious. don't sell a stack of 20 frost arrows short, after a few chests that is a stack of them, and those are pretty nice.

extremely nice:
- some chests have outstanding rewards. Specifically in the swamp instances, you can get full stacks of both wood and metal that are awesome time-savers. The barrels that are not-quite-chests in the BF have tin, berries, hides, and other goodies. Plains chests have crops (which can be used for seeds) and arrow materials and metal as well I think. Mistland chests have the potions and money and a variety of stuff you shouldn't need but doesn't hurt to have.

Swamps are the only ones that give useful, (at the time), stuff. Chain and iron ore.

Edit, and onion seeds in the mountains.

oh man I had such mixed feelings when I opened my first infested chest.

on one hand I was like "Finally! Something other than coins, feathers, and arrows!"

on the other hand I was like "...really? these consumables are all like 3 biomes out of date..."
