Interesting, but I think it may have just been coincidental timing. The api you are using should have nothing to do with how a server behaves. In fact, I don't think the server is even aware of what api you are using. Vulkan, OpenGL or DX should not make any difference to the server, the server is just feeding game info back to you for your game and system to render.

That was my thought as well but I didn't mention mods as I was not sure that they were even in the game yet. In any Early Access game you need to be very careful about keeping backups.

This is a known bug unfortunately and sorry to hear its happened to you.

In future please remember for Early Access especially i recommend backing up your game saves manually after each session. I do this and have managed to "side step" this bug on 2 occasions. There are tutorials on Youtube on how to do this.

Do not rely on cloud, ever.
Even AAA games seem to have issues with Steam Cloud.

Were you using vulkan?

I feel for you, I had the same exact thing happen to me a few months back, unfortunately you need to be consistent in backing up your world and character. I thought the developers rectified the “world destroying bug” but it sounds like it might still be around.
