The (for now) six most important basic survival rules of Valheim
Here is what I have gathered so far as being important things that help me survive in the cruel world of Valheim. I'm currently still in the swamps, so you might adjust things once you get to the mountains. I still think these rules are a good baseline, that should serve you well no matter where you go.
Additional suggestions and corrections are welcome!
1. Overconfidence is your greatest enemy
That's right. Just rushing in unprepared, because you got that nice, shiny armor without any regards for tactics is a sure death recipe. Or going out in the afternoon thinking: "Ah, just gonna get some stuff, I'll be back before dusk".
Just don't.
2. A well-fed Viking is a surviving Viking
Always being well-fed with the best buff-food your biome has to offer is the singular best survival action you can take. In fact, I dare say that having the choice between the best buff-food on order or that nice, shiny armor... I choose the buff-food. (Of course you should take both.)
That's also why doing corpse runs naked and with an empty(!) inventory is a thing (and actually preferable, because it allows you to run in, snag your stuff, and run away as fast as you can). You can still take a few hits without dying.
3. Better to run and live to fight another day (and carry home that precious loot) than to fight and die alone (and lose said loot)
Pretty much says it all. If you got jumped and start feeling the heat, activate Eykthir and make a run for it. There's no shame in running from an enemy that will get the better of you.
You can always come back tomorrow better prepared and kill their sorry a**es.
4. Pick your fights... carefully (corollary of rule three)
Whenever you engage, be mindful of your surroundings. Try to single out your enemies and pick the weaker ones first. Then, when you laid waste to them, you can stand up against the big guys. Always be on the move. Don't stand still, but be mindful not to go where there could be more (and more deadly) enemies lurking.
5. Be afraid of the dark. Very afraid
Unless you absolutely know what you're doing and what you're up against, it is advisable to stay put at night. Sleep it away in your cozy bed and dream of a nice, bright sunny day tomorrow. This is especially advisable if you're just getting aquainted to a new biome.
6. A hit blocked or missed is a life preserved
I know, some people don't use shields (and bows). But I think they are absolutely essential to surviving in the harsh environment of Valheim. An upgraded shield can block most enemies and make it much easier for you to survive waves of them. A bow is essential to taking out spawners and higher level enemies from afar.
Two star draugr archers? Don't go mano a mano. They will waste you, because you cannot evade their arrows. From afar? No problem. Just plink away at them and actively evade their arrows. Now you can, because you see them coming.
...
That's it for now. If you have more rules or like to post your view of all things Valheim survival, please go ahead!

I usually do the naked run, too but I also make a LOT of outposts. I like to build, so it works well. Whenever I'm in a new area, I make an outpost with a portal to main base, a bed + fire, and spare food.

Everytime you get somewhere entirely new, MAKE A PORTAL.
Give it a unique tag, and make a note on the map with the exact text of that tag. First time I sailed to a new continent, I landed.... walked 50 feet from the ship, and got god stomped by a reallyyy pissed off 2 star troll.
I had, when only 10 feet from the boat, put down a portal. Yes, indeed. I re-armed and went back before he'd even wrecked the boat.

Don't beat the boss of the current biome until you scout the next biome and have a plan.
Basically the max level you can get to kill a boss is the same level you should be entering the next biome in... so it just makes sense to me, as well as seeming much safer, to scout first.

Spiral inward to them, 'circle strafe' (like in pvp shooters games) except instead of a pure circle, reduce the distance between their shots. When you get close block their final shot then kill them. Granted, shooting is easier, but some people don't use bows at all, others prefer to clobber stuff. Plains tar babies are the hardest thing to avoid if you want to melee, and even those it is doable, just difficult with more than 2 of them activated. I prefer to shoot them, but everyone should know the technique. This is similar to the 'wait for it' technique. Every enemy in V has an attack and delay cycle. Its really short on wolves, but for the most part if you wait on their attack, avoid or block then go stab them a few times, you can kill anything and never take a real hit. The only difference is that the ranged guys have a longer delay and you have to close the gap.

Always have a safety net aka spare food/gear/shelter/etc nearby. Even the best prepared viking can still have a moment of bad luck and die, so always have a Plan B in case you need to do a corpse run.
Even if that means just making sure you have a spare longship/karve (or the mats to make one) back at your respawn can save so much time and pain. Build outposts with some extra food so you won't have to do a corpse run on an empty stomach. Besides it's just always good to have a place nearby to drop off mats and repair before heading back out.
Especially in places like the swamps and mountains I find having little oasis(s) of food and a warm fire to take a breather is always welcome.

^^ FWIW if you make little camps, you can bump the comfort up a lot for cheap. Skin rugs ... you tend to have far more skins than you need... maybe a finewood chair and a hearth if you have stone working or can bring the 2 iron bars along. Really handy in the mountains where you will want stamina to climb and mine.

If you don't like the terrain you were given, change it. Hoes, pickaxes and hammers aren't just for bases. Make better pathways with hoes in the swamps and pickaxes in the mountains instead of swimming everywhere and sliding around constantly.
Build small shelters on top of rocks for added defense. Same for workbenches and portals. Up a tree works well too if you don't need a fire. If you do need a fire and don't have a handy rock, refer back to the rule above.

10 - No naked corpse runs, keep your old armor in a box, along with older weapons, shields, and so forth, or put it on a stand or hang it vertically, the point is do not go to any corpse markers naked, you will die.

Nah, back when I did corpse runs I always did them naked. Food is important though. I'd rather get all my stuff back in one click and then run for it than to fiddle around with a system that always seems to leave my best gear behind. Sneak and dash.

Naked corps run ftw. Eat the best food you have and dive in, grab your stuff and head out as fast as you can.
The advantage of doing naked corps runs is, that the inventory will not open and stay in your way while you are being invited to dinner by some friendly neighbors... with you being the main course.
