Starting Out

Hey, so I'm super early in game. Killed first boss and I'm begining to explore the dark forest. I'm getting my ass handed too me, hoping someone could maybe give some advise on what to do? It feels like im constantly being swarmed by endless greydwarves of varying difficulty. Any tips or advise is appreciated!

You need tower shield to fight swarms of weak enemies. Use all stamina to kill as much as possible, press block and slowly move back till you regain stamina. Repeat if necessary.

Do not waste resources on bows. Basic bow is good enough to hunt deers. You only need good bow in mountains. It is unclear at first, but bow makes all fights much harder. Learn how to sneak and parry instead.

With copper dagger you may farm trolls. Use special attack from behind and you'll stunlock troll. Quickly attack after parry(not block) and you'll also stunlock him. Crafting troll armour will save your bronze.

Upgrade whatever gear you can, and learn to conserve your stamina in fights. Most monsters die in just a couple hits, but I often see people chase and waste all their stamina sprinting instead of just walking towards them or waiting for the enemy to come back to them. This leaves them with no stamina to fight or defend themselves, so they just get whittled down because they made themselves helpless.

Are you going out at night? That would make it a fair bit harder. There could also be a spawner nearby (purple glowy thing).

Howdy. Some general tips.

Upgrade gear as much as you can.
Be on the lookout for new food. 3 food wherever possible.
Learn to parry/block.
Be sneaky.
Figure out which type of greydwarf are priority kills.
Have a bow and attack from range while being sneaky.
keep an eye on stamina- if it runs out you won't be able to fight or run. sometimes you'll need to walk away to build up stamina (rested bonus will help here)

one more thing most of the grey dwarves are afraid of fire so if all else fails carry a torch (or three). they can still attack from range and be careful of the ones that don't seem to be afraid of fire. Also fun to set them on fire....but attacking or blocking with the torch will reduce its duration.

If I were to give starter tips I'd probably go with:
-ALWAYS maintain a rested bonus. You can get one with as little as sitting next to a fire (though if its raining the fire may go out without shelter so, no bonus) but increasing your comfort in the area you are resting will make the bonus last for longer. Your HP and Stamina regenerate faster, i believe you gain skills slightly faster, and it's really easy to keep one going since the lowest duration you can get is 8 minutes.

-Bring arrows, preferably fire arrows. Most things in the Black Forest don't get along well with fire, especially the trolls which are usually the hardest fight for a newer player in that biome (besides dungeon raids). If you can get a stealth shot in you will do extra damage and might also stagger the enemy (if they even survive the initial shot).

-It's good to get used to trolls. They hit real hard, and they are huge with a massive reach...but they are huge, and slow, and surprisingly helpful if used correctly. While they can be surprisingly sneaky for their size, its really hard to miss a target that large with arrows, and you can generally "outrun" them at a casual jog, taking shots when they stop to try and hit you. The armor you can make from them can also carry you into the next biome in progression if you are cautious and smart about your approach. They can also help you gather materials to. They can hit surrounding structures or destructibles (like trees, rocks, ore nodes) and can actually break pretty much anything in their biome that can be broken...including the trees and ore nodes.

-Food is god in this game, what you eat determines whether you live or die, succeed or fail, roughly 80% of the time (it can vary, some play this game naked so itd be closer to 90% for them, but most rely on the aid of their gear as well. Plus meads exist). Meat based food tends to be more health focused. Plant based foods tend to be more stamina focused. Some dishes are decently balanced between the two (like jerkies tend to be). What you are doing usually determines which food mixes you favor (more HP focus when expecting to fight a lot or difficult enemies, or more stamina focus if exploring/fishing/building/mining/running around kinds of things) but no matter what you end up picking, never go without food. Something is better than nothing. Of course, the right food is always best, dont expect red mushrooms and cooked boar to keep you alive in the next area on their own, even if they still give you a better chance than the default 25 HP.

-Since you have beaten the first boss and can mine, CAULDRON, if you haven't already. See previously mentioned "food is god" principal. Cauldron is where most of the food from now on will be made. If you haven't done a dungeon to get the kiln/smelter up yet, see back to the "trolls hate fire and make good armor" notes. Also when you do get bronze, be aware that you don't have to make EVERYTHING you just unlocked. like the bronze armor does offer slightly better armor than the troll, for a movement speed penalty, no set bonus (troll adds to your sneak ability), and a significant time investment. It's often better to just stick with troll and apply your bronze to your new tools and weapons (like you probably do want the bronze axe and pick, and whatever melee you favor, and you may consider taking up a blunt option like the mace for enemies like skeletons).

Specifically for the black forest:

Avoid the pink glowy things, those are greydwarf spawners and sometimes they will spawn a brute or a shaman.

Leave the area at night until you feel confident in fighting the toughest thing there.

Greydwarfs and everything else are attracted to sound. If you chop down a tree or start mining, you will be greeted by the welcoming committee. Sneak is good if you don't want everything running after you.

When one greydwarf aggros, deal with it as soon as possible so you can fight them one at a time instead of in a mob. When in doubt, run. Sometimes they chase for a long time. If you can get them to spread out, you have a chance.

Trolls move faster in the meadows than they do in the forest because they have to walk around stuff you can jump over or squeeze through.

If you see skeletons but there's no tower, there is a crypt somewhere nearby. Upgrade all of your deer armor, or get some troll armor before you go in one. Shields help against archers. The stagbreaker and the club are your friends. A campfire right inside the entrance can be helpful. (You need to go in here to get stuff before you can progress.)

Mobs can not climb vertical cliff edges and are reluctant to fall down them, even if they're not very tall. (Hint: You can make these.)

One mistake I made as a newb in the black forest was setting up a mining camp around a copper node. I assumed fire (torches) would scare away greydwarfs, that it was useful to have a repair station for my pickaxe and a fire for my rested bonus. The combination of these things allows events to trigger, and I had no defences prepared for that.

Grey dwarves are frustrating for the rest of the game. If you make any noise at all, expect to encounter them in the forest or at night anywhere.
- they run from fires. If you want to mine, a fire or two will keep most of them running around instead of attacking. This also makes them a pain to kill, though.
- the green ones are priority as they heal the others.
- the big brutes are next, as they hit kind of hard and are an actual danger.

Other than this, learn to use a shield so you can block their rocks and attacks, cut them down or use fire arrows.

they have spawners in the forest that never stop. You have to rush or sneak in and smash it before it spits out more. Its near impossible to mine or do much else near one.

~ Collect wood, resin, and feathers. Make a crude bow and wood arrows to farm/hunt birds. During stormy weather, birds are extremely easy to hunt.

~ Make fire arrows and use them to pick off trolls from a distance.

~ Make full set of troll armor.

~ Travel the outskirts of the Black Forest for tin deposits and mark them on your map. Then travel a bit inward far copper deposits and mark them as well.

~ During the daytime, use the antler as your first pick to mine these deposits. You WILL get attacked at times so be ready.

If you are good at evading, you can kite a troll to these deposits and let it do the mining for you. DON'T BOTHER WITH BRONZE ARMOR. Use the bronze for tools and weapons.

Eat food. Look at what stats each food gives and eat the balance that you think you need.

Don't underestimate your rested bonus. The massive percentage-based regeneration bonus it gives to health and stamina is going make everything faster and safer. No matter where you are you will never be too far away from some wood and stone where you can make a campfire to top yourself up to 5 minutes.

Learn to get comfortable with how dodge has been implemented. It will make you invulnerable to attacks for a very generous portion of the animation.

Almost every enemy in the game is helpless against the bow as long as you have enough arrows.

Build a wall perimeter around your base. When you get raided, lure everything away from trying to enter that perimeter.

The bronze armor set is completely not worth the time it takes to gather and refine all of its respective resources. Find out how to make the stealthier alternative and go with that. (Though you might consider the helmet which gives better defence without incurring a movement speed penalty.)

the don't bother with bronze armor is highly subjective. If you have bronze, and trolls are scarce, you use bronze armor. If you have trolls, and bronze is scarce, you use troll armor.
Ive had both things in various maps over a number of characters. Most often, finding that many trolls is harder than finding that much copper and tin. Once in a while, you get more trolls, or even better, you trigger an early troll raid.

ya, black forest is abit dicey when first getting there...

pick all the mushrooms, carrot seeds and thistle and save em. mushies and carrots make good early food and thistle will be used later. (always fence your crops. critters in base area destroy crops if can)

fire arrows for trolls. learning their patterns is key to timing shots while running. try and use landscape to make them path in circles giving more time to shoot.

i always place a workbench, firepit and box under the main copper ore chunk. then proceed to dig out vast area, down to bedrock and fairly large radius, leaving main ore chunk till last. (free shelter) should get around 100 copper per deposit. just gotta leave one path to hop out with. the workbench can handily repair first antler pick.

gotta have a shield for those skellie archers when going near/in dungeons. ya need 10 surtling cores to make smelter and charcoal kiln. if your super lucky, 1 dungeon can produce that many. usually takes 2 dungeons to get 10.

Other tidbits as mentioned by others -

~ Collect ALL vegetation you find. The weight is insignificant and food is a must.

~ Kill all deer and boar on sight. Again, food.

~ Once you feel confident enough to mine, chop down some trees and make a bench. Cover the bench to make it usable then create torches to place on the ground around you. As someone else mentioned, greys hate fire, it will keep them away.

~ There is a technique of digging underneath copper and silver nodes. Once there is nothing surrounding the node, a single hit with a pickaxe will shatter the entire node which is cool to watch. After this, you can just come and go just collecting instead of picking away.

~ No one ever seems to mention this as nearly as often as it should: Find a troll and practice rolling from its attacks. It is FAR easier once you realize how many I-frames the roll has. Watch and maintain your stamina and you can roll-attack anything to death.

if no one said it, make 2 or 3 picks from your antlers. Those things break fast.

Bronze gear is my fav, looks sexy :steamhappy: But seriously... When you will dig copper, put a few campfires around, so enemies should stay away*, dig deep because it's more of it underground, not only one 'stone' on top. Don't waste bronze for pickaxe, first one is enough good even for early swamps and you can repair it on workbench (you don't need more than one because isn't that many slots in your pocket to keep them with you). In my opinion first thing you should craft is bronze axe (you can use it as weapon and for cutting trees), then build upgrades for your workplace and kitchen. When you see greydwarf spawn point, stay away or just jump there, destroy it quick, then run away and kill greydwarfs from far using a bow. If you stay close to it too long, you will have whole army around you. Of course collect blueberries, they are tasty (mark on map spots where you found at least few, you can back there after few days and collect more in a short time) and white flowers, and thistle (for later).
Eat well and rest, have fun and enjoy your adventure!

* In general campfire can be your best 'weapon' at the beginning in Black Forest (when you put it under feet your enemies and weather is good). For sure you will need blue gear set, so find troll cave, jump into it with hammer and build as many campfires you can between you and troll, dodge to avoid attacks or/and use shield. Try to keep troll away from you and use bow with fire arrows (upgrade bow as much as you can, better bow = better life).
