Beehives
Just wanted to say to the developers that beehives are generally very compact, and don't require a ridiculous amount of open space. Please fix this as its makes no since. Great game but you need to research actual bee farms or bee colonies if you're trying to go for realism. It really ruins the immersion of the game having to spend time constantly building and breaking down a beehive just to find a space that makes them happy.

My beehives are basically on top of eachother and I don't have this issue, but I do remember when the game first being out, the bees were very tempermental.

I don't ever remember the devs mentioning they were trying to go for realism.
Then again we do rape the land and pillage the locals.
Also, it always says there is not enough space when you first place a hive... gotta give the game 5 to 10 seconds to catch up.

Just put them in a row on top of your house. You can put them pretty close together so long as their roofs aren't clipping eachother.

I have spent the past hour trying to put beehives down in what logically would be considered such an open space that a spaceship could land, and it keeps saying needs more space. It's such a ridiculous restriction. I've just plain given up on beehives, and started using console commands for honey. Seems to be a pretty big issue since the game came out based on google searches, yet they haven't done anything about it. I personally don't understand the since in it, but it is what it is. Hope they remove it but I doubt it. Just really is an immersion killer in an otherwise amazing game. I imagine people who've had a bee infestation in the walls of their house would love to have had this kind of logic in place.

I have never experienced this “space” issue when placing beehives. Put them outside away from any fences or walls.
It should be easy to place them, and also you can stack them on top of each other for better space efficiency as they will still work.

I usually put down a short pole in an open area then put a floor piece on top. That will fit four or five hives on it. The only thing you need to worry about is not having a wall too close the sides. Putting them on a roof also works if your base doesn't have much room inside its defenses. You can easily walk on a 26 degree roof.
I think they just wanted to make sure players weren't stashing them indoors.

Are you running mods, one of which might be somehow throwing an error into the hives? That doesn't sound right.

Are you trying to put them inside? All bees need are to be outside without something right next to them. Put them on a 2x2 floor tile outside and you should be good. That seems less immersion breaking than devcommands...
Bees do make nests in the walls of home, but they still need access to the outside, Around here, the primary method of treating such an infestation is to seal off all the entrances and exits.
I can tell you that it does work. They find ways to get out, including into the house, but they do go away.

IRL bee apiaries can be as little as 6 inches apart but no one does that. You need room for movement and equipment between the apiaries and you also want to keep your hives from fighting and stealing each other's honey when there aren't enough nectar producing plants in the area (due to say a drought) and to keep them from spreading pathogens from one apiary to another.
If you put your bees in an open area inside your base they have to be half the distance away from the wall's height for the bees to be happy and the full distance of the walls' height if they are in a corner and the entrance to the hive has to be facing away from the walls. If you separate them by a 1 meter tile's worth of space you can walk between them and they will be happy.
You can also put them inside a roofed building as long as the hives are far enough away from the wall and you use smoke holes or cheese the roof height the way you can with venting smoke. The hives will say the bees are unhappy but they will still produce.
