Had the same issue. It's worse in the menu, in the game it should be ok, enable vsync/cap fps to make your gpu work less.

menu using pretty complex scene with fire, viking and a whole forest of trees. In general, game itself has less objects in field of view than menu scene

Valheim min system reqs:

MINIMUM:
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 7 or later
Processor: 2.6 GHz Quad Core or similar
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce GTX 950 or Radeon HD 7970

So basically you're playing the game just a sliver above the min requirements.

So even under settings in game that match the limits of your rig, it isn't hard to expect you'll have the temp and demands on it you're speaking to.

Then if you're instead attempting to play it in max settings, then that of course would make it even more likely.

Of course if it is indeed an older rig, it may be nearing the end of its life expectancy. Hardware doesnt last forever.

Lastly, there's a high chance given the age of the card that your rig is old and the question then comes up as to whether or not you've done a cleaning of it for dust(which prevents air flow properly in a rig) etc. If you haven't done so recently nor regularly, I highly suggest you do so because that'll wear your rig down faster in the long run.

man, you are wrong. 980 is the top of the product line, it's more close to 1070 in productivity. It's not a slightly above the minimum, it's pretty good actually.

I have 65℃ and 80% utilization. GTX 1660ti. If your utilization is not also higher than mine, you may have a cooling problem.

The main menu is pretty busy. There are swaying trees, a fire, particle effects, lighting effects, etc. However, a person generally clicks through the opening menus pretty fast, so you wouldn't save much power if the animation was turned off.

I'm for greening every menu when it wouldn't detract from the ambiance of the game. Especially if you're playing on a laptop, but if you're plugged into power it's power you or somebody has to pay for.

I'm not just talking about Valheim, of course. All devs should get creative and ask, every time, "Does this menu/dialog need to be animated?" You can do a lot with a sepia-toned still image, or a picture of a rune-stone, etc.

A menu should not become an industry-standard performance benchmark, as in "Hey, I can run the Valheim main menu at 60fps!" "You lie!"

For giggles, I checked my rig in the menu system. It's not CPU intensive at all, but yeah the main menu is clocking my GPU at 84%/71C for a 1060GTX. Heh. About the same while playing.

I also routinely hear the fans rev up while on the main menu.

This, how hard can it be?
Cap your framerate if you don’t want your system to run full blast in menus or run excessive framerates you monitor doesn’t support.
You might lose some responsiveness but at least your system should run cool and quiet, this isn’t Counterstrike.

Limiting FPS to something reasonable should help. The menu is a complexish scene but with good hardware it'll pull hundreds of frames a second if unlimited. And that will generate heat.

I had my fans ramp up to max every time I went sailing and the temps jumped way up. The cause was the decrease in what the GPU needed to render so it just pulled 400-500+ fps on the open sea. Once I put a limiter to it everything was fine.

Video cards and CPUs generate heat when active. Everyone knows this. Computer maintenance problems belong in a computer maintenance forum.
