yeah wait till you are in the swamp and have obtained some iron. aside from access to stone blocks that will also give you more efficient tools that make farming much less of a hassle especially if you are going for a building project like this

if you kill the 2nd boss you will unlock plenty of build pieces and lots do to in the swamp to keep you busy, before you ever feel the need to start upgrading to silver unless you are in a hurry. and it sounds like you aren't in a hurry.

I agree. The best looking build pieces are the tar-treated ones you unlock very late game with fancy carved patterns and multi-tonal build pieces. But after beating the second boss and going into the swamp you gain iron reinforcements to build larger structures and also the ability to build out of stone. So even without those late game build pieces you can still do a lot and make some really cool builds. Look at any popular screenshot dated more than 3 months ago and you'll see just how much you can do with just the iron-tier build items.

Wood comes early, as you know. Stone is your next major material. To use stone you can try pot luck to get the resource you need in biome, or kill other bosses. Don't want to give too many spoiler unless ask for it :)

There would also be some finer wood, but you'll need to almost finish the game and get a bit sticky

There's a lot of details but yeah, the main building materials unlock is in the plains and involves some pretty intense mini-boss combat.

Are you sure about that? I just did my first tar run with a friend and there were a bunch of tar monsters but they weren't mini-bosses like the Trolls or Abominations are.

You need only the second Boss to get the key for dungeons in the sump. There you get iron, this is need for the stone cutter.

Technically you don't even need to kill the second boss; you can just go to a Swamp and kill some Oozers until you get enough iron. Might also find scrap piles if you're really lucky.
