On melee combat and blocking
Tramping about the Mistlands of late. My preferred combo for seekers is a black metal tower shield and Frosty. For the most part it works very well. Now I was clearing out a mine last night and got jumped by a 2 star seeker. "OK - I can do this." I had full health and holding aloft the tower shield seemed to be mitigating most of the damage. FWIW I wear a root chest to minimize pierce. Now this is where it gets confusing for me. I had probably 190 health at the start of the fight, or at least I think I did. It's been my experience that holding aloft the shield costs no stamina. I tend to hold it up and whack away with Frosty. When I'm striking, am I all of a sudden vulnerable ? Because he reared back and slammed me against a wall and next thing I know I was back home in my bed. WTH ???? I'm not understanding the precise mathematics behind what happened here so if any of you theorycrafters can enlighten me I'd be grateful.

A 2* seeker can do 240 pierce and/or 200 blunt. Both of those are way more than the block armor of the shield. All of the excess damage get's applied to your stagger limit, which, at 190 health is 76. If that is exceeded, the block fails and all the damage gets through.
Figuring out exactly how much the character actually takes at that point is complex, but I think that is what happened. If it got in a second attack while you were staggered, it almost certainly would have finished you off, but I think it's possible that just one could be enough.
20/20 hindsite alert: You really want to have bonemass power when fighting a 2* seeker! :-)
I don't know what the rest of your armor is, but this situation is also why I don't think it's obvious that the root chest piece is the best choice in mistlands. It helps against that 240 pierce attack, which is the worst, but you're more vulnerable to the 200 blunt attack than you would be if you have full padded or carapace.

A mod in the HUD to display tactical? Enemy damage versus character defenses? If HUD shows red you'll wind up in bed - dead.

Blocking costs 10 stamina per block (parry costs 20). If you have less than 10 stamina when you get hit the block fails. Blocking only works in the front 90 degrees. If you turned or slid your shield is no longer interposed. If your finger slid off the mouse button right before the attack hit same result. If the lee spring in your mouse is old it can fail intermittently which gives the same result as having your finger slide off the button.

I think it might well be a mouse thing. It's not the first time a strike has gotten thru when I was sure I had the button fully depressed. First time it's killed me outright though lol.
