You need fire and shelter for the egg to hatch. Making the eggs warm is not enough, needs a roof over it.

The silliest way i noticed to get chickens to lay eggs at a timely manner is to build the small coops you see in the Meadows exactly like that. Create 1 for each chicken you got. Small hole for breathing and a roof. They be poppin out them eggs for me now, i got 4 chickens!

EDIT: edited to say it seems like a lot of the things in the meadows are great examples. I just hope one day once we hit a certain tier we can plant raspberries and blueberries. yes i know there's a mod for that buttt i'm not a super mod kinda person ;/

you need a shelter to hatch it. so I have that part covered and I have 3 well had one got killed by a deathskito

I managed to do it but it took multiple days. I had two chickens in a small house that had 2 fireplaces on each end. I think the warmth plays a factor in this. After setting them up with plenty of food I waited for like 3 days until they finally made love and after that the eggs wont stop coming!

I am not sure what happened I logged back in and like you I am getting tons of eggs. I wonder if restarting the game fixed it. Well it is on the public test branch.

I just put a chicken in a little house and it laid an egg within 2 in game days for me. They eat turnip seeds too.

Place them near fire but not on fire. When the egg is on ground it will say (warm) if its close enough to a heat source for hatching
