Am I missing something?

I started playing the game today and was looking forward to a co-op experience similar to Deep Rock Galactic, but I was disappointed to find that there were very few players online and that all the servers were password-protected, except for one. Does anyone play freely with others? If it's just a multiplayer game and not a social or coordinated cooperative experience, I may consider requesting a refund.

Looks like many things. But Hey its life, next time you do better and miss less.

Also love DRG, but Valheim is definitely more like an open world, building/crafting/survival game. I'd say Conan Exiles, ARK, 7D2D and possibly ICARUS are better comparisons and even those are pretty different.

it is social/co-op but the servers are run by the players, so your experiences there may vary. I would seek out an unmodded server doing a fresh start for your first time, and someone will surely play with you if you ask in the LFG forum.
Some people steal things and tear stuff up. The passwords protect you from the kids that knock over your snowman.

the password should be an option not a "Must".

people learned really quick that unless you password protect your server, you will 100% get griefed at some point.
either someone will come in and steal all your stuff, destroy your base and leave or someone will do the opposite and dump a load of end-game gear that trivializes the experience (some players always get tempted to pick it up and use it, unless you all agree not to pick it up, which requires both/all parties to agree).

Grab some friends, play together. :) It's not an open MMO type of thing.

You went in with a 100% wrong assumption. You might want to fire your intel team.

If you want to play with others, here's the LFG forum: https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/discussions/3/

A deep rock version of this game would be very weird.

The problem with open servers, is there is nothing to prevent griefing, theft or harassment, unless the server is VERY well and VERY actively moderated. Characters are not persistent on the server, so someone could hop on, take everything you own, and leave, with no trace.
There is nothing to prevent someone from spawning in a bunch of materials in a single player world, jumping on the server and dropping it all down.
This makes it so that outside of your own personal progress, the only real thing to do on a server is to build, but with no built-in tools for managing a community, it's very much like an anarchy minecraft server - Anything goes, build at your own risk.

Ehh, that form of multiplayer would ruin the experience as it's almost story based, progress of the world and character are linked so it's kinda jank to join mid game and ruins the experience in my opinion.

I love DRG, but this is absolutely nothing like DRG.

You don't queue into quick matches, you invest dozens of hours into a single world, slowly progressing, exploring, building bases... Chill game with friends or solo, but I wouldn't want to play this with randoms.
