If you first start playing the game with a controller, you will be golden. I switch when I want to sit back and it's great. Just more used to the mouse setup

OK thx guys
One more question
I own a xbox one controller
Should I use the steam big picture feature or just start it as usual?
Will there be any different in support?

Thx guys

I've played 169 hours with KBM. I just finished playing an hour with an xbox one controller, found no issues whatsoever. Everything was relatively simple to figure out without even looking at the bindings. Managed to build a building with an upgraded forge and tame a 1*Wolf with the controller in that hour, to be honest I dont know where the "Partial" comes into the controller support lolz

In saying that I'm using the Microsoft windows 10 wireless adapter. Cant imagine a cable would make much difference if you're using one.

Dropping: squeeze R1 (right trigger) and press X-button.

Split stack: squeeze L1 and press X-button. Brings up a slider for selecting amount.

I used the mouse+keyboard before, but since H&H I decided to play with controller to ensure my Dad and Sister can play when they get beefier machines. They have trouble with mouse+keyboard.

My verdict: entirely playable with no keyboard or mouse.

Caveats:

* I haven't found a way to change camera distance, aside from having a mousewheel handy. I prefer zooming closer in the crypts so the camera is less janky against the roof. And farther when sailing.

* Unlabeled map markers -- which is okay with the number of icons to select from, but there are special cases which arise, such as noting distant visible land. Also, I haven't found a way to X-out the icons on the controller (anyone know?), for cleared crypts, etc.

* The crosshair isn't where melee attacks go -- instead it's based on facing, which is kinda-nice, since you can independently look around and fight/mine/chop... but kinda bad for spear/atgeir which are more difficult to aim. Pickaxe is also more difficult to aim. You can get some aim-control by blocking, which faces your character to the crosshair.

* Selecting "hotbar" items is not very quick, moving a cursor and selecting, compared to just pressing the number key. Keep items used in combat clustered together and it's not too bad, but gets worse when you want access to meads plus alt-weapons.

It's completely playable with a controller. As the person above me mentioned you CAN drop items and split stacks with the controller. I also used the steam controller configuration window to setup a new controller layer that adds bindings on my DS4 dpad for the camera zoom and mini-map zoom.

EDIT: If you are ok using mods there are two really handy mods that make weapon/quickslot changing trivial with the controller. "Equip wheel" which adds a nice graphical weapon wheel for quick switching and also "Last used weapon" which lets you swap quickly between the current weapon you're holding and the one you had equiped previously.

I have noticed that since the H&H update that it seems like trying to walk backwards, or turn around and walking towards the screen (towards yourself) seems a bit messed up.

It's like your are being held back by a rope or an invisible tension of some sort. Had no issues prior to the update.

Anyone else notice this using a controller?

My Xbox controller support seems fine...it seems I might have lost the zoom in with the bow[if I'm remembering correctly that the feature existed]. Haven't played in quite a while so my memory of is a tad vague. You can split stacks and drop items to the ground, so support is reasonable, the only missing elements are correct HUD screen prompts on which controller button to press, seems locked to KB control keys.

how good is the compatibility with an xbox controller?

i have used an xbox controller with this game since day one, as have a good friend of mine. if you want to use a contoller with absolutely no mouse or keyboard, it works just fine. i will say, certain things i find easier with a mouse (like navigating inventory, moving around different menus, selecting build pieces) but play-wise, it works perfectly fine. my friend does not use a mouse or keyboard at all, and uses solely a controller for everything i mentioned above. so yes, it is entirely possible to use a controller, and the controller is fully supported. when you first start playing the game, certain things may feel a bit clunky (as they did for me so i used a mouse like mentioned above) but if you are determined to use only a controller you will be fine in a few play sessions. just takes getting used to like any game.

But what about splitting stacks or dropping items on the ground? Do yall go without or am I missing a binding?

I mean it’s compatible but I don’t think the controls are very enjoyable. It’s been awhile since I last tried it with an Xbox controller for fun and if I’m remembering correctly, you can’t change any control bindings.

Its not entirely complete, but fully playable outside a few QOL bindings. For example, as far as I know you still can't drop items or split stacks of items...obviously anything requiring typing will require you to use a keyboard.

I use a gamepad and it works great, I just have to also have my wireless mouse within reach for random odds and ends out of combat

Worth mentioning that some new bindings and tweaks were made in yesterdays update, so they are improving on it. I can place and remove map markers with my gamepad now, and I love it. I use 360

Shoot, should also mention that, while they aren't promising anything, the devs said its highly likely they will eventually make a console port, so in the very least they'll keep working on better gamepad functionality in the meantime

I played hours and hours with a controller on release. I was able to do everything after some rebinding.

Since the update, I created a new character and it seems to have reset the controls. The default's are not super intuitive and it is challenging to rebind them (for instance if you try to bind to the B button it just goes "back" in the menu).

You *can* play with the controller, but support could use some love from the devs.
