Roots for Boars?
The sign on the stone near where I spawned said I should try feeding roots to boars. I'm on like day 14 and have yet to find any kind of root. Am I missing something?

I take it this is a joke? Kinda like meet me on the 9th hole at midnight? I put a mushroom on my toolbar but there's no way to actually feed it to the boars.

Throw it at them like you would toss an item out of your inventory, ensuring it does not get thrown out of the pen. You can hold Shift (or control?) when you click on the item in your inventory and it will get automatically tossed in the direction your character is facing.
Helpful tips:
1) While you are out foraging/exploring, grab all the mushrooms and raspberries you run across.
2) If you find a gathering of each, mark it on your map and everytime you run by there, grab them.
3) Craft a chest and put it in the pen with your boars. Put all your extra shrooms, berries, carrots etc in there when you return from foraging. This way you will have a supply of boar food right there in the pen and won't have to go into your house and back again to feed them when they run out.
4) You could also store the meat, pelts, and trophies in the chest untill you get a bunch and get around to putting them into your main storage containers.

You have to toss it out of your inventory, on the ground, in the enclosure with the animal.
They will still get aggressive while taming if you get too close, so I would suggest getting a stack of berries (yes, one whole stack) and tossing them in the pen to forget about the boar for while as it tames.
A couple in-game days later, check the berry situation to see how many they've eaten. When throwing in a stack, they will eat one unit at a time when they eat.. so stacks last a while.
As for Carrots, you will find Carrot Seed bushes in the Black Forest. Look for the white flowers. When you pick one up, it gives you 3 seeds, which you have to plant using the Cultivator.
Tip for farming: it sounds tedious but it's kinda fun. I highly suggest waiting until you have a massive hoard of whatever planted crop you need for food (Carrot, Turnips, etc.. there's more), and THEN start harvesting half for food and half for seed stock.
When you pick a grown Carrot, for example, the Cultivator gains another option to plant it as a "Seed Carrot", which will grow a plant like what you found in the Black Forest, giving you another 3 seeds.
Edit: so to reiterate about farming, what I would do is plant every seed you find for Carrots, and then turn all those Carrots in to "Seed Carrots" to build a massive supply of seeds, like 200+. Then, start harvesting them with the 50/50 (or other ratio) mindset so you have some for food, and more to sustain your stock of seeds.
Do note that planted crops, and seed crops I believe, will decay and disappear as well as be targeted by enemies. Keep your crops enclosed in something.. I suggest raised stone walls using the Hoe. Something mobs can't climb over. Farming gets important later, so losing your big crop is sometimes not an option. (Due to limited supplies in your nearest biome, for example.)

Without joking - you throw it on the ground near them. To tame it takes a variable amount as they are resistant to tame if they notice your presence BUT you must be in the area for them to tame. They'll also not tame if they detect fire or enemies. The whole tame/breed thing has a set of 'rules' that can be a bit annoying. Don't let it stop you - I kept at it and had 200+ **boars in one place that all came from a single **boar. They also brought my fps to its knees at that quantity. After that is was "Let There Be Blood"

Make sure you make a butchers knife to kill them too.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't try feeding them fruit or fungi because the game clearly stated they wanted roots. Go figure.

I haven't come across any carrots. Are they only found in a specific biome?

You won't find carrots themselves, but there are white flowers in the black forest occasionally. Pick the flowers to get carrot seeds. You need a bronze cultivator in order to plant the seeds. When the seeds sprout into carrots, plant the carrots to create more seeds.

carrots are a root vegetable and do not come in plastic bags... I suggest feeding the piggies some carrots, or turnips.

Hmmm, a root that could be consumed as a food. Where would you find that?!?!?
