Do you like chimney pr0n?

After building many tiny makeshift "homes" with a campfire, and being required to deal with the fire's smoke, it's clear that a chimney of some sort is the natural evolution from simply putting a campfire outside the walls of a tiny home.

After incorporating some sort of strategy for building chimneys for single story homes, I then of course graduated to attempting a cooking station located on the 2nd floor of a new home. It wasn't actually difficult to raise the ground level up to the 2nd floor, but then I needed to hide that monstrosity of raised soil.

Short story long, how do you all build chimneys? Have you ever done it to support a 2nd floor cooking station?

The Jank. It's basically a double chimney. I don't know what to think about this.

What also helps is to build a pillar of stone, campfire on top, then clip wooden flooring under fire.. et voila! Remove the pillar and the fireplace stays. Also nice since it is technically a fire-hazard. Obviously, this don't work with hearth.

Outstanding plan for constructing a 2nd level campfire Veranda! I completely forgot that after one places a floorboard under the campfire, the earthen or stone support can be removed. Even placing 2-3 pillars stacked, depending on how high one's overhead flooring is, then removing them would work ticketyboo.

My fireplace is a Bonfire in the centre of my 3 story Sea Hall... a giant chimney with a raised roof over the chimney.

I have made all kinds. Probably the largest housed the stone fire pit on raised ground inside the middle of the house with an entry to the house on each side and a window to see it from outside. Big interior chimney classic house style.

My current one though is quite different as I build more for function than fashion.

I put the house on stilts to start before I had iron or stone to work with. Raised the ground in one corner in the right front for a fire just outside so I could just deflect it away from the side of the house but have the wall open inside to cook on with bed and comfort area there.

As I got stone I built up on the rocks there a platform just below the floor level but close enough to the bed and comfort zone for the hearth to count.

Just outside of the comfort zone here but a half step to the left is comfort level 13. Don't have a stone throne or dragon bed yet.

A second floor hearth can be supported by 2 stone columns, I added arches for aesthetics.

Too enclosed, bet it goes out a lot.

A fire needs at least a 2x3, 2x4, or so to keep from going out constantly. If the fire goes out when there is no rain putting it out then it is not getting enough air because the area is too enclosed.

Another option is to give the fire open area behind the walls in the A-Frame type houses. Make a chimeny as you normally would, but let the air in behind the walls.

Neither fires go out and neither cause me to choke on smoke.

Stone floor tiles are too heavy to be supported by wood so use iron wood beams to support them if not a stone structure or off the ground.

By placing horizontal iron beams on the floor, one can then place a hearth or cooking fire on top of them, or place stone flooring pieces on the iron bars then one's choice of fire source on top. I spend a lot of time repairing stone keeps I come across in the wilds, and I make 2nd level hearths in them. I usually place them where the vertical archer peepholes are, and usually place down 2 of the largest stone construction pieces laying horizontally flat. This requires the "advanced building mode" of a certain mod, which allows one to rotate any building piece on the x, y, or z, axis.

You should also put a small roof/cap over the top of the chimney otherwise when it rains your fire will go out

Also of interest is that if the chimney's cap is too restrictive, the campfire will cycle on/off sporadically.

I would have never considered a treehouse! that blows my mind

Core wood logs support stone floor. Give it a try. I had that in my old world.

One of my bases in a swamp is built where 4 or so indestructible trees are close together in a circle almost, since stone can clip into those trees and be supported, I managed to make a stone floor that way between all the trees.

You can place campfires on stone floors. So I do it with stone. You'd have to unlock the recipes. You need a stonecutter table, which requires iron to build. So you'd have to be in the iron age. You need to reach the swamp!

I'm on the cusp of that. I've reached swamp, found iron, but have yet to smelt any. Decided to take a break and build a bigger base with a walled perimeter - basically done here; just need to get a few more iron to fill up my boat's storage before sailing it back.

Otherwise, that info is good to know. Was wondering when stone floors unlocked.
