I've never played Minecraft, but my friend describes it a "Minecraft with vikings." SHe's not the dishonest type (and always tries to get me into Minecraft, heh).

I wouldn't say your friend is dishonest, but definitely not good with comparisons. Painting in waaaay too broad strokes.

'Bout the only comparisons one can make is you can build, dig, and fight things. That could apply to a hundred different games.

It's not really... this idea that anything with voxels and crafting = minecraft is a juvenile assessment, and way too broad.

Nah, minecraft is a sandbox with almost zero progression. Valheim is sandbox-ish, but has tons of progression.

Can't really comment on Minecraft since I've not played it, but I hope you guys don't use the term "metroidvania" to describe metroidvania games. Seems like the same principle; calling one game another to describe what it basically is.

Comparisons are fine when they work. Comparing apples to apples is ideal. Apples to oranges is rough, but acceptable to a degree.

Minecraft to Valheim is like apples to trucks. There's so little to compare that making one is silly.

You’re joking, right?

Valheim’s progression system is pretty similar to Minecraft, at least when it comes to upgrading gear. The biggest difference though is that Valheim pads the progression behind tons of grind and boss fights.

you completely wrong. It's like Cyberpunk 2077, but with vikings and on remote island instead of the city. And with building. And pet taming. And with dragons.

there is no such thing as progression in minecraft.

you can literally have everything from the start if you know what to go for.

progression: is that part where valheim locks things behind biome bosses.

minecraft doesn't do that whatsoever unless you want to think about mob dropped items which is like 0.01% of minecraft.

Minecraft is ugly and pixelated. Valheim is beautiful. They aren't even remotely similar.

Except there is, it just comes in a different form, and unless RNG favors you, you still have to work towards better gear until you get diamond, which is “progression”.

Refer to above, and that is also something I acknowledged in my original post.

yeah you don't actually know what the word "progression" actually means.

there is NOTHING locking you behind progression walls in minecraft.

yes, you have to go and get those items like iron to get diamond, but you don't actually have to "unlock" anything.

progression in a game has to do with advancements, the only advancements in minecraft are when you actually find the new items, with valheim you literally cannot get iron without the swamp key.

the two games are not comparable.

the major difference being that valheim locks progression behind bosses, while minecrafts way of gaining new items is literally to just go and pick them up at any time whatsoever.

Progression
noun
the process of developing or moving gradually towards a more advanced state.
There is only one way to interpret it… I already acknowledged that it is a lighter version of Valheim, so I’m not sure why you’re acting so smug over something that boils down to semantics, but do go off lol.

heavy player of both minecraft and valheim, they definitely live in the same genre of games :)

progression loop is very similar absent boss fights, of which minecraft only has one.

overworld -> nether -> end = meadows -> black forest -> etc

wood -> stone -> iron -> diamond = wood -> bronze -> etc

Building focus

Survival elements (though Minecraft's food system has a bigger stick than Valheim's)

Farming

They aren't the same game, but the comparisons between them are not incorrect.
