Fishing... for some basic competency

I just seem to be an inept fisherman. Maybe I don't know the basics here.

This is how I understand it...

1. Fishing in this game isn't like Minecraft or other Survival Crafting, where the result is just an RNG, it seems like the fish are actual entities generated by the game and you have to have the bait near one for it to take it.
2. Different fish take different bait, so even if there is a fish near your hook, it wont take it unless its the right bait.
3. When you cast, keep it within 20 meters, because you'll lose the fish if you hook it too far out.
4. Once you cast, start bringing it in a meter at a time at intervals.
5. When you hook, hold down the right mouse button and hope your stamina doesnt run out.
6. Find where the fish are jumping out of the water as a clue to where you need to cast.

Now I'm posting all these not as tips, but just how I have come to understand it. But my understanding is clearly flawed, because I spend literally all day fishing and come in with maybe 3-4 catches. And so many lost worms.

Please alleviate my suckitude.

Which part is causing most problems, finding fish or running out of stamina? In the case of latter, it probably boils down to simply not having enough stamina for the reel?

The skill will eventually reduce stamina cost by 80% and increase reeling time by +200%, so... with great amount of "practice", the actual process of catching will become much easier.

For the standard approach, there's kind of a minigame going on. If the fish wiggles around, stop reeling it in because that will deplete your stamina ultra fast. Only reel when the fish is calm.

I'd reccomend the nihilistic approach tho.
Catch the biggest fish by not trying to catch them.
Cast close to the shore and if a fish gets hooked, do nothing. Only slowly walk away from the shore. You can pull the fish on land that way without losing stamina, even high tier ones.
You can simply pick the fish up once they "followed" you to the shore.

1) yes fish are entities and won't spawn just because you throw in a line. You have to go where they are.
2) yes.
3) its complicated. stamina, your skill, the fish level, type of fish, distance all play into it. But generally speaking fish have 2 modes, run and rest. When running they use more stamina to reel in. When resting its easier. Past that its just the combo of the other stuff as to how much stamina they drain vs what you have from your food vs distance to pull in. You can cheat a little by walking deeper onto land so if they get loose, you can just pick them up, but if you do too much of this the line breaks.

4) no, not really. Its tied to whether its in run mode or not.
5) yes
6) yes, and learn to tell their types apart by sight as well. Also bigger ones are harder to reel in.

Fishing is a mess right now. I am hoping for some redos on recent changes, but that should get you started.
