IMPORTANT: PSA Announcement
In order to save you a LOT of pain and much misery, read here.
Wards stop monster spawns, and this includes those incredibly annoying drakes in the mountains. And thank god for it, they are the bane of my existence and in honor of this discovered secret found by GamePressure I wish to note them and tell everyone here about it because sweet mary mother of god do drakes and other enemies ignore structures and outright ATTACK workbenches, if you wanna keep the monsters away, work for wards and place them where you want safety, as a ward does. As for the DEVS THAT MIGHT READ THIS do NOT change it because I'll tell you right now YOU DO NOT know how annoying is building in the mountains with drakes creaming your structures every five minutes of every single hour of every day especially when porting. I hope this has been helpful to anyone who reads this.

Old news and there are plenty of structures that prevent enemy spawns. Workbenches being the most common and cheaper to make.

But actually no, they are larger radius and anti-air. I haven't checked if it works on deathsquitos but wards are far more effective in my experience and not everyone knows.
Edit: And actually I tried workbenches first and building structures. Wards are far better for those that want to use them.

I don't believe the workbenches initiate raids. I think it's simply if you spend too long at your base that initiates them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'll just be very, very specific. Wards, workbenches and structures prevent spawning. Thus wards will prevent enemies from spawning in their area. In theory if you got as many wards as you could and placed them around you could stop spawns indefinitely but it hasn't been tested.
Raids are designated to happen at chance once every 45(35?) minutes. The reason I posted this whole article is because wards have an extremely large radius that stops spawns up down left and right. Buildings have a very, very small spawn stopper simply so they don't clip. Workbenches are the largest you can get without wards which stop spawning in their area but don't go as high as wards which is what I found out thus making wards superior and could potentially be the key to stopping raids or at least minimizing the damage and spawning.

I dont discount your info, but whenever i place a work bench no spawns are stopped, In fact it seems more spawns are created and i am not referring to raids. This is very hard to believe that workbenches do that much for protection, never have i ever experienced this phenomenon. I'll just be very, very specific. Well that's just it, they dont, it's bs. The area they provide isn't very big, GunsForBucks mentioned it but it's just not very effective which is what I'm trying to say. Wards on the other hand have the bigger radius hence why they are much better. It would take you probably 60-70 workbenches, elaborately placed to stop spawning in a raid area, whereas wards will create a much wider area.
For example when you place a workbench, an invisible area around it will stop spawns, anywhere outside of that general circle, they'll spawn and they have a threat meter. Monsters are programmed to attack workbenches because it's where your base is and where they cant spawn. Hence why you may not have noticed. I found this out in the mountains because wolves attacked my workbenches, but damn if my castle exists - unless there was a workbench behind it. So it probably 'feels' like it does nothing but in reality they just come out from a distance to destroy it. Note how greydwarfs dont attack their own structures and when you are outside of your building that they attack you instead. So what I'm getting at here is that they are focusing the workbench down and can find it just like they find the player.
You ever wanna test that theory, build a square box with an open space and place a workbench in the middle or die in it with a workbench.

yeah i was like "what....!!!! since when did workbences stop spawns?" not in my lifetime. My best Option was to cut down trees an surround the area or plant trees near my house front and back (like seriously as close as the tree will allow, oaks and pines seem to have the best effect) especially pines for flying beasts. something about trees just confuses just about every single mob in the world. Trees sure are magical and cheap.
I also found this technique extremely useful in battle for giving me time to regain stam, since the mobs seem to NEVER EVER RUN OUT OF STAM, that is some BS and they should get a spankin.

Well , i have a little plain farm island full of workbench to stop spawn and guess what , no one monster bothers me anymore , mosquitos not exist anymore there But actually no, they are larger radius and anti-air. I haven't checked if it works on deathsquitos but wards are far more effective in my experience and not everyone knows.

And drakes and mosquitos spawns from the ground, not in mid air ( you can see this with drakes when you are close to a egg nest )

Workbenches work just fine and as I mention are cheaper to make.
Just overlap their areas so there are no gaps and no spawns will happen at all. You can make the area so large that raids may happen but nothing will spawn or they will spawn far enough away to not aggro on anything and just stand around looking stupid.
I have played about 15 complete playthroughs including some after H&H and the dynamics have not changed since the game came out.
If you mean workbenches cause spawns in that it is one of the structures that count as one of the 3 needed in an area to be considered a "base" but I would assume wards as well as many other items count for that as well. Having more than 3 isn't going to increase the chance of a raid. And you are likely to not set up an outpost without at least 3 of the items anyway since it includes beds and fires... many things.
The only raid that happens outside of a base is the wolf hunt event. That only should happen away from a base in either the mountains or plains.
If you are worried about them being attacked you can cover or bury them as well.
I've even taken over whole plains areas with just workbenches. No spawns, not even deathsquitoes ... although I ended up opening up an area so lox could spawn and I could farm them.

Just use campfires. They aren't base structures and therefore don't spawn raids, they can be made from things picked up off the ground in the meadows, and like most everything else not in the "building" tab, they have a 20m sphere of spawn cancellation, even when not lit. Ward stones have virtually no purpose since the game is already designed like you have control of your clients outside of the server.
