Wilderness cart roads, share your tips and tricks
Firstly let me define wilderness cart roads as a cart path you will use more than once but not 'permanently' - mostly through untamed wild areas of rough terrain.
I think the most important tip is to scout out and then mark the path on the reverse course, both on your map and using pathen ability of hoe along with clearing brush and the occasional elevated beacon fire for the confusing or important for some reason portions.
Beyond that basic tip, I'll start off by offering this:
When all else fails, rather than doing a bunch of digging and terrain elevation, consider building a bypass through the rough area using 26 degree roof and regular floor tiles, double width of course, supported by poles in the center where necessary. This can also be used to widen a portion of a path along a cliff or hillside that just isn't quite big enough for a cart to pass.
Looking forward to learning new things! :)

i really enjoy making roads, but i very very rarely use pathen. i find the level tool far easier to make roads with. i like to generally follow the lay of the land, with just a bit of modification if needed. if i'm using it more often, or if it's closer to my base, i like to sometimes go over them with the cultivator and turn it into farm land, then go back thru that and add in grass here and there to give it a wandering 'look'.

Generally I'll scout out a possible path to check elevation and perhaps I'll put a few markers on the map (which I do for tunnels that are more finicky) whereupon I'll go back with a hoe either using the path option or elevation option. Cart use can be kinda annoying but you have to balance how much you put into it depending on your path.
Swamp can be rather easy to make a level road so you can more easily stuff your cart with resources like Iron whereas other biomes can be a bit less forgiving when it comes to elevation changes.

I don't build roads in anything but meadows and I use the hoe liberally. River to cross, no to bridges just fill in with earth. I remove rocks and trees, path around hills that are too steep to path over etc. I'll build stone roads through and near my main base simply because they are easier to see.
Any place else I sail, build a portal when I make land fall, mine and gather what I can, load anything that can't be portalled on the boat and take every thing else back through the portal. When the boat is full I sail it back. If there are still resources on that island to exploit I take my axe to the boat, portal back, and rebuild the boat. Rinse, repeat. I'll move the boat and portal around the coast until I've removed every thing of value and on the last trip with the boat i'll dismantle the portal before I leave. If the island has other farmable resources after all the ore has been mined I'll build an outpost or a portal hub and move to the next island.

create world, build a forge there, build storage. whenever your mining just log out when your full up or your pick axe is broken. log into the world you just created, dump ore and repair. log out then back into your actual world. continue mining. no roads, no carts, no boat trips against the wind. this game has enough grinding without having to spend 20 minutes taking your ore back to base.

We aren't playing the same game.
