My apologies, I pretty messed up that sentence.

What I really wanted to say was, that I encountered Rancid Remains in burial sites, from spawners in the swamps and from the infamous Skeleton Surprise event.

Not anywhere else.

Skeleton Surprise isn't even unlocked yet in our world since we haven't killed Bonemass. But even if the event was possible, it didn't happen.

My wife encountered one in the Black Forest just yesterday and nearly died to it, since she wasn't properly prepared. So, yes, it seems they do appear in the BF as well. It might have been late evening, but not necessarily nightfall.

I have never encountered them outside of burial sites, from spawners in the swamps or from the famous "skeleton surprise".

yea these guys are a little rough with stars. They don't stop, unlike other dangerous stuff (trolls, shamen, even brutes are fairly slow) they move fast and mess you up if you are not ready for it.

They spawn from bone piles like regular skeletons.

The only location ive seen where there are bone spawn points except the black forest crypts are in the mountain biome. If there is a mountain biome close by the could have come from there.

There is a small chance it could have been a survivor from the skeleton raid, if there one recently, they do that sometimes.

I have seen mobs stick around attacking stuff after a raid occasionally if they wander outside of the circle or if the event ends, and the player leaves to go somewhere else and comes back to the area the raid happened.

Bone piles spawn in swamps too as well as regular skeletons without them but it may be only during the night when you have killed a certain amounts of bosses i am not sure.

I've seen them in dungeons, never outside, usually warding a skellie spawn point.
