What kind of builder are you?
I've noticed that there are two types of players in Valheim: The Aesthetes, and the Efficacious.
One builds aesthetically pleasing structures that look theme-accurate. Things like mead halls, foundries for their smelters/kilns, docks, stone/wooden walls, etc. These are the kinds of people who sacrifice efficiency for appearance, like making a large open pen for their tame boars to roam around, or spreading their chests out in the loot room.
The other builds highly efficient, sterilized structures that basically look like impenetrable boxes of stone and wood, or towers that go high into the sky. They build massive earthen walls and deep trenches around their entire base. They sacrifice appearance for efficiency. These are the kinds of people who have tons of wooden chests clipping together for maximum storage space, and have 20 boars crammed into a 5x5 square room.
Now you might be thinking "but Red Purger, I do a little bit of both!" and that is certainly true for pretty much all players in the game, but the majority of players gravitate towards one style of building vs the other. I also want to clarify that being one or the other isn't a bad thing; just a different style of play.
So which are you?

I have one long hearth hall with a high ceiling, where two rows of labeled storage chests line one wall. One corner holds a raised platform with a bed and decorations for comfort (and now some gratuitous Yule stuff), another corner a set of frequently re-dialed portals. Over time I've expanded though, adding a fancy stone side room that became the Mistlands-tier crafting area with checkerboard black-marble floor and tar-shingle roof. Lately I've been turning a simple back yard into a black-marble workshop for smelting and baking. Have another room with no real purpose yet other than working on wall-to-wall wolfskin carpet. So, mostly a functional box, but throwing in some decorations here and there.

Speed and practicality. My base for each character is a very dense open shack with only what I actually need to craft and sleep. Only exception is that I sometimes put fences around my garden when mobs start having a tendency to wander in. I found trenching boring, tedious, and of questionable benefit. During raids (if I am home) I walk a short distance outside my home and deal with it, no damage to my base. Only time I ever consider trenching is for the wolf raid and only if there are no rocks anywhere close to my base. Even the seeker raid is manageable without trenches, well timed controlled mini sprints work wonders.

My main base is a combination of aesthetics and efficiency. My portal hubs and secondary farms are all built for function.

A little bit of both lol. The group of chests together is me...my pigs and dogs have biggish spaces but my base is sort of like a courtyard style with a bedroom building and a kitchen building. my portal/blacksmithing station is open spaced and i have only a two stone tall fence XD

I try to find a good mix, but I'm definitely more for efficiency. It's hard to not just make a box with everything nice and close by.
My most recent base is a bit prettier to look at. I've got a main hall with long tables overflowing with food and drink, hearths lighting the center, banners along the ceiling, walls lined with armor stands and monster trophies (but it's all secretly for that fat comfort levels). Then I've got several smaller structures for a smithy (smelter/kiln/forge), another as a general work area (workbench stuff), and another structure for my kitchen.
It all looks pretty good, but also... they're a bunch of boxes.

Day 1 base up to Moder/Yagluth is still a wooden box with moat around a raised grounds. Safety first. After defeating Yagluth, theres a big gap between it and Mistland, so i build a nice looking dock that connected to my Elder/Black Forest base, connecting any moat with the sea. Looks pleasing, but still leaning toward "sterilized structures that basically look like impenetrable boxes of stone and wood."

I settle in the exact center of the map and build haphazardly until I have all of the building pieces because once I do I can and will tear everything down that I built previously.
Needless to say, waiting until I get the new marble has been quite the punch in the ♥♥♥♥ for me. lol

After a certain point I feel like you spend most of your time standing around in your base not actually doing anything...it might as well look impressive.

i freestyle all my builds and go off "vibes". i often end up wit something that looks cool and unique but may not have the best floor plans on the insides. lol
oh, and i run into corners and seems not quite fitting so i have to tweak what im doing ever so much

Good looking inside? Most of my exteriors are just lumps of raised terrain and rock walls, looking as if someone spilled something on the terrain. But inside its a palace, efficient as everything is in short reach, but beautiful. Hard to explain.
Ive made my share of gigantic castles etc that were looking good outside but impractical, too big and inefficient.

Bit of both. Dont make purely decorative structures, but do my best to make them symmetrical and mildly embellished

im more into the 2nd type, but wish i could build more aesthetic buildings. Tbh my basement I built as a storage is quite nice, i even spent iron (that im lack of) for supporting pieces but im proud of that basement.
But man.. that home above it is just a simple 7x7x4 box

Early game, my builds a slap-dash. Get it up, get the fences going, put in everything that I need. It looks gross but works. Mid-game, I revisit and rebuild or scout a great location and build something awesome to move into that we can defend properly.
