pro tip, always have an unnamed portal at home for easy access when out exploring

Instead of making a new bed have a portal to your main base. There you can keep your past gear and some food in a chest near your bed so you can use those to reduce the chance of dying again before you can retrieve your lost items.

all of it is cheap/ easy to find and use/ carry and make i dont see the problem with using portals or beds or having extra on hand

Sometimes just dying can save time, but not if you got to boat back across the ocean lol, i had a bed both ends just forgot to tap it on the way past for re spawn reasons. First time exploring the swamp and swaps not bad if you stay away from plains misquotes

Portals instead of beds is better as you can get a Rested buff before doing the naked run to fetch your stuff after death. Lowers your chances of getting stuck in a death loop and don't require a massive up-front investment for it..

I hear a lot of people talking about building a bed when they get to their destination . Never understood it. Why not just build a port and leave your spawn in a safe place?

you would need a fence nowhere is safe lol mobs attack it if you are near bye and run off

The second time I went to a new island with a buddy we built beds, but since I didn't like where mine was I rebuilt it and completely forgot to set it as my spawn point again. My friend had to build a portal for me using resources from his own server, thank god he was there because I would not have been able to retrieve my items after I died if he wasn't.

Perhaps some people don't like using portals? The only thing to remember when bed-hoping on a long course, is to always rebuild and claim a bed after you destroyed it for any reason (get resource, free the way, move it elsewhere, ...), unless you exactly know where you'll next spawn (including upon reconnection).

You can build a bed very quicky in the entrance to caves, I agree build portals, bed is just handy and quick respawn for where your currently exploring

Build portals.
Sometimes I dont want to go back to main bed so its no big problem for me.
If get killed I want to respawn in that area anyway.
Have lots of beds spawn points comes in handy :)

Always carry items to build a portal on you and inside the ship if you can. Always have a blank or strange name for a portal back at your gateroom. After all we all have done messed up too. ll
