Workbench trick ?

I remember long ago we had to place workbenches in base to prevent monsters from spawning into the base.
Is this trick still needed ?

As far as I know anything player built has that effect, but workbenches are still easiest for this purpose as they draw a dotted line for the effective radius and are just 10 wood.

No, not just anything, not by far. The list of pieces was already posted by Rhapsody.

It is still advised to start with workbenches so that you can see the range, but after you have that figured out, you can replace the bench with something else on the list. I often use campfires for that. They don't have to be refueled in order to work.

I tend to stick with workbenches and build them into tiny ugly huts around the yard, or into walls/ceilings. I like having the building coverage. Later on I start encasing pillars of layered crafting tables in stone, if I'm really serious about a location and building.

On the other hand I'm not above just chucking some bonfires out past the perimeter wall to push back spawns some more and aid illumination. Most things won't attack fire since it hurts them.

You don't need to use just workbenches: https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Player_base
