Actually at least for my seed the mist lands is in many places, past the plains, the swamps and some snow. I figured we had to defeat a boss in order to get an item for the "mist" to lift a little but it has been awhile since i have played the game and defeated the bosses, so i wanted to ask people on the forums! <3

If you cleared the plains, you should have the item handy already then.

Defeat Yagluth to get an item that is equipped to disperse the mist (a little).
