there is a mod in Nexus for that: Build Camera They ought to make a build camera mode in a future expansion, because this is an issue with a lot of things. My problem is with roof parts. I really could use a build camera with my hammer so I can hover above the place I want to build and not have the camera just do whatever it wants in the meantime. I can't begin to count how many times I've tried to build something only to find it was put on the wrong side of the wall or overlapped instead of snapping over or under.

Make yourself some scaffolding. Using floor pieces up the side of your build so you can get the angle needed to place then (over top).

Your mouse cursor needs to be pointing at the edges of other built objects, for them to snap together.
What I do, like the others have suggested, is built a bunch of ladders wherever I need to build higher walls. It makes things a lot easier. Ladders and floor tiles depending where. I make simple support beams if I need the ladders more than two ladders high, or place them against walls.

When positioning, it is the cross-hairs that matter, and they must be able to "see" the edge in 3D.

Make a ladder and get a better angle on placement?

Yeah, stacking walls can be a pain. You'll need to position yourself so you can line up the cursor with the top of the lower wall for placement. The ladder is the easiest way to do it.
