Wife had bigger brass than I did and pulled an Indiana Jones, jumping down the shaft to clear out three floors of mobs on her own
BUT, we can't find a way for her to get back up

I have never encountered that issue so far.
Often times I find there is more than one way to get down/up from lower levels like you are facing.
Maybe another path behind a wall you can break down?
After a good college try she was able to make the jump from one side of the staircase to the other, but there were lots of almost-falls-to-deaths.

Should be able to wall jump back, get her some stamina food if she is low and just spam jump at the odd wall to get back up top.
