The trick is to dig deeper. Stand in a hole or ditch, and hit the lower point on a wall with your pickaxe, and it will dig out a lot of ground. The pickaxe quality does not matter, and it would be wise to use the Antler Pickaxe for digging because it costs the least stamina to use per swing.

I could see a mod that increases the width, length and depth may be useful for large excavations. Hopefully one shows up eventually.

Nice. I think I only made a canal one time to cut down on travel time as the map had a tiny bit of land connecting two land masses.

I think my favorite project that I've done was make a tunnel in the plains underneath a number of large boulders the led to a switchback stone stairs going to the ramparts leading to my little keep on a nearby hill on the mountain biome.

Currently working with an Elder Altar that is up top a ridge close to some water where hopefully I'll be mining underneath 2 boulders making my way up to the hollowed out Altar up top. I'll probably then make some stairs up to the altar itself where I'll build a 2 story structure of some sort. Depending on how things go with the lower boulder I might end up with a nice harbor of some sort residing in meadows which should mean a bit less aggro for any boat.

The only mod i am aware of is veinmine, this destroys all of a node in one hit. I have not used it though

And this will only help you if you come across a large block of a type, so would speed up overall, but not all the time.

I do not know about a mod, but if you dig as deep as you can in one spot, then go in one direction then it cuts down the full height of the ditch all at once, saving a lot of time.

I started that but its going to take a looooong time to finish my trench. Wish there was a way to speed up the process.

Just curious, but are you trying to dig the equivalent of the Panama Canal? Why such a 'massive long trench'?

Yes

There is a limit to how deep you can dig. Any 'very long' path across an island is probably going to go above the water line at some point. Don't want you to waste all your effort.

Yea if you're going for a canal of some type it can definitely take a lot of time to make sure a karve can get through without trouble. The Longboat requires even more finesse when it comes to width and depth. Might be just better to break down your boat and build it across the way and if needed make a cart to move supplies as it's easier to make a level road.

But hey if you just want to make a canal, go for it. Just make sure you have decent stamina food and a nearby fire hut for the rested bonus. Also a hoe just in case you have to raise terrain to get to a spot that you missed.

No its a pretty low level area with a shallow stream going through it already. I want to make it deeper and easily navigable but its going to be a lonnnnng dig

I know I could, the idea is to avoid spending many hours on this if there is a mod that can do it faster.
