Troll dies watery death of stupidity

Apparently Players are not the only ones capable of stupid unnecessary death.

This idiot swam out to sea in a storm (ground is shaking)

Importantly this seems to indicate the possibility that (land) critters are subject to the same water stamina limitations as the player. I've wondered about that and now there is a data point. Maybe a DEV can comment.

I have a base built up to be 8m above calm sea level extending out quite far. Trolls used to venture out there when they could still stand and peak over the top, but then I extended it out a few more metres and they never even try. However, greylings swim out there all the time. 'Cuz they're stupid or something. If I don't shoot them to put them out of their misery, they'll literally tread water forever.

Despawning critters do drop stuff. I got several chains that way when wraiths chased me out of the swamp and got caught in the dawn.
I've never had that happen but its still worth a check. If there is nothing dropped you know he despawned for certain.

I definately saw a death splotch on the water, he croaked. Unless that's also what happens when a critter despawns.
If so, take your boat over to where he was and look down at the sea floor. If he died there will be troll hide and coins, If there are none he despawned.

Hmm, it's storming. Maybe a serpent got him.

Not a DEV, but I'll comment anyways. This is not true. The only mobs affected by stamina in any way are Lox that you tame, and then only while riding them.

My feeling is that critters should subject to the same stamina effects as the players.

So, if the Troll has no stamina problem how is it he (assuming gender) drowned?

He's not affected by stamina. He's just slowed by the water mechanics. If he disappeared he didn't die. He despawned.

Recently I have seen a bunch of trolls just wander off and despawn, even before the event ends, and even if injured. Only trolls, everything else seems to stick around like they are supposed it if they have been hit.

Some of the critters seem to have a sense of self preservation.

Skelatons especially stick around.

I think trolls retreat when pathfinding can't find a way for them to get you, I regularly experience it when hunting them in the wild and the trees are too dense for them to get through. Feels weird to have to chase them to finish them off, but I find once I am close enough and damage them again to renew aggro they come to me. But if I don't renew aggro they just walk away. I assumed it was an AI tweek so they don't just stand still as a target, so I can see it working the same on a raid if you're in a safe sniping spot.

And back to original topic, this does include seeing them wander off into the water, but I've never seen one drown.

Though admittedly I've also seen greydwarf brutes "run away" even from close quarters so maybe it's more of a glitch and I just notice it on trolls as they're the only thing I fight from a distance (as I'm sticking to early game restarts currently). The brutes eventually come back but maybe to trolls wander far enough to fully lose aggro.

Yes, they do sometimes get confused and just stand there while you pincoushin them. The AI equivalent of players fumbling keys and mouse.

But the troll definately did the deathplosion. If that was drowning or despawn I've no idea. But I do have the hope that the devs will implement stamina for all critters.

And ammo limits.
