Patches and Modding

Hi All,

I recently started a single player game, client side...after two complete runthroughs with some friends through a server staying 100% vanilla.

My single player game...I've added a bunch of mods. (Epic loot is AMAZING btw)

I'm not that much of a techy PC gamer, and have had bad history with other games and patches and mods (saves not working, etc etc).

I'd like my single player game to go on for a long time.

Any tips hints and how to not break stuff when Valheim has a patch? Do I just not play till all the mods get updated? (Then I assume I have to redownload and reinstall all the updates to the mods?)

Thanks in advance

The bottom line is that you are not ensured a world that will survive through to the release of the game. Most likely, given their approach so far, you will have that.

The real threats to your worlds and characters are outside the game, honestly. Messing up cloud saves can lose progress or entire worlds, for example.

So, honestly, the only advice I have is to set up a daily backup of your game files if you want to have a long lived world, and when in game, log out once in a while to force saving and updating of your auto backups (game provided) or manuals (your own backups).

Thanks...is there a way to simply not update Valheim any more? (I play through steam) or at least delay to give mod developers a chance to catch up.

Yes, you can turn off auto updates, the problem will be you can no longer launch the game from the steam interface as it will attempt to update it.

Go to your library, right click on Valheim, open the properties, and under updates select only update when I launch.

The solution is to navigate to your Valheim installation folder and send a shortcut to your desktop.

Don't forget to bookmark or track your mods somehow so you can easily check for updates so when everything has an update or is confirmed to be working you can update Valheim.

If it is a interface mod like armor and quickslots, you may have to wait for an update for your stuff to show up in the game, it's not missing, it's just not visible.
For functionality mods like epic loot, you can just remove the mod until it is updated and keep playing without it.
For significant changes in the game, you'll have to wait for mod infrastructure to update (bepinex).

You can always remove the mods with your mod loader - or manually, just don't remove the mod config file or you'll have to set your mod settings again. This will allow you to play normally on your save until mods have been updated.
Many mods don't need to be updated unless the underlying code in the game gets an update or there is a big change to a library the mod depends on. Those should work between updates.

As always, being a mod user means that you will always have to deal with this inconvenience and learn to get along with it and overcome any of the challenges it presents.

Thanks a bunch, appreciate it
