How's the Black Forest for a second home?

Considering moving everything to there. Any reason to stay in the meadows? I don't want to spend half an hour moving stuff for nothing.

yea that sounds pretty cool.. but what if they nerf floating structures? Your entire work could come crashing down.

Black Forest has always been my go-to place to make my main "base", by digging out underneath the Elder altar and essentially giving a completely safe, and fairly large area to set up. I have never had a single mob, including during events, get inside or damage anything inside my home. I have only one portal under there which leads to a larger portal "hub" built at the Boss stones (starting area) where i place all my other portals as well as gardens for growing crops (meadows)

Plenty enough room down there to place all my early-midgame crafting stations and storage, and all completely safe from mobs.

This! I have 2 Elder altar homes in my world, one that was high enough altitude that I could dig it out as an underground home, and a second that was right next to the water where I built a 2-story castle around the 4 columns.

yeah black forest is a very efficient choice when starting to start going for bronze. if you want to cheese it for safe place you can build on top of a troll cave entry as these are indestructable and provide enough height to make mobs no issue

Blackforest home is way better then a Plains one...its not about the fulings
its the curiosity of the lox that could lead to having a herd of loxes rampaging all over the place

at the start having a black forest base might be hard, but later you could handle things way better

In my solo world I made my main base on the elder boss. You can dig it out and create a floating base to avoid attacks, or make a moat and dig a room out under it to place a portal and raise the ground again so the only way in is by portal (I did this one). So I have a base on top of it, and my portal room and bed in the area under it protected from attack.

That is so cool! I didn't know you could have floating Elder sites! If that's the case, I hope IG won't program that out in the future. I definitely want to try this. ^_^

The Black Forest is fine to build in. I've clear cut several areas of Black Forest entirely and have built towns there. I still get a random greydwarf or two now and they wandering in the edge of the towns, but with nowhere for them to hide everything is easy to take out with bows, including deer.

The locals are ... crankier.

Why move everything? Just make a 2nd (3rd, 4th, etc) home whenever you need one.

Just make a portal from meadows to black forest in some stone tower and you can farm there. Its generaly not a good idea to set up there till you get some skills and armor to survive it.

Also trolls can destroy your house if you dont build a hole araund it.

It's probably the safest zone as long as you build a canal around your base, or raise the ground around it, to protect from Trolls and the like. Best on a coast, usually there's a number of small islands you can pick from and use, and you can then pickaxe the ground between the island and the mainland in any areas that you can walk, in order to make it deep enough so that things have to swim across to get to you, which is essentially troll prevention and Greys suck at swimming and can easily be sniped in the water with a spear or a harpoon later - so basically nothing will threaten you. You can also raise the walls around the perimeter of your island facing the mainland too, in case things do make it across they still can't get in - strategically leave gaps to funnel enemies, or whatever you want, really. Terrain manipulation is key to a safe base perimeter regardless of where you build and you'll learn this around Black Forest/Bronze Age anyway.

The main reason it's the "safest" is because of the above, and there are no water creatures like Necks that will harass your boats if they spawn near enough to become curious - rare and more of an annoyance than anything else since they are weak, but doesn't exist at all in the Black Forest which kind of puts it above the Meadows, marginally.

The other zones have things that can fly over your walls and such (not to mention no matter where you build, raids exist) and are of course tougher than the Black Forest by default.

In terms of a main base and moving - you will soon unlock something that will circumvent this need. Although Metals will still require "journeys" if you do only have one main base.

Don't worry too much, you will surpass them, and even though they do a lot of damage, they are basically made of glass.

Well, except for one. But you have a while before you have to worry about any of them, no worries.
