lost my first farm today.

So i lost a mist lands farm today. i build up earthen walls around it and was pretty confident that the seekers couldn't get to it. but i logged on today and entered my farm to see the crops destroyed but they left the bench and the portal for some reason. odd.

I don't understand how this could have happened unless you were nearby with the way mob activity works in the game.

Settling for multiple smaller patches could be more safe, and never planting all of your veggies at once. The bigger area you want for your crops, the more vulnerable it will be. I have enough space for just about 12 crops behind my initial portal tower and no enemy has ever approached it from the side of the crops thanks to ridges and water acting as natural obstacles.

Seekers can fly, no walls will protect you.

Your best bet is to get super lucky and find a section of "Tame" mistlands, that is, mistlands that only spawn hares. I have a spot on my server connected to mainland. Just a tiny sliver, but it's packed with roots, arable land for mushrooms, and bunnies spawn. I even found a small harbor with anglerfish. It was the holy grail of MIstlands real estate. The occasional goblin wanders in, but they're usually preoccupied chasing bunnies.

lol the dvergers are neutral; you can be ripped apart right in front of them and they
don't do squat until they are attacked or course if you hit them by accident they
will kill you

It's possible that what happened is the Gjalls and rogues had a confrontation and
your farm was 'collateral damage'. But still I think you need to be 'in the area'
for that to happen.

I think the trick with any farm is plant it and leave. Don't hang around the area;
come back in a few days and harvest stuff. Repeat. Attacks don't happen
if you're not there or none of us would have intact bases.

Are you playing with others on a server? If so you could have been burgled. Or another person was near there and collateral damage. They might not have noticed or been embarrassed and hoped you wouldn't notice.
If solo, nothing should happen when you aren't there. If you are solo and somewhere else on that seed then stuff will keep growing. If you log off then everything stops, time does not march on. If you are on a server with others then time clicks by as long as someone is on.
One thing I always do is keep a few of every seed or plant somewhere else safe in case everything gets destroyed. Which was good the time I didn't realize I planted the only other barley I had in meadows. Derp.

i have my puffs farm in front of a cleared out infested mine directly at the ocean shoreline where there was a marble stair leading up to the mine.... before i found it. now the mine is just a hole in the mountain side and my small farm is right where the stair once was. could cultivate most of the small area there without needing to raise ground. and its sealed off from the rest of the biome by the water to 3 sides and 1 with the mine entrance. never made any kind of wall or defense.
only a portal and a bench to prevent spawns on the farm.
once was attacked by a 1 star seeker when i was harvesting the 50 puffs. it came flying in from the mainland but i saw it comeing a mile away already. and since seekers are idiots when flying in it tryed to lunge at me at the edge and fell down into the water and then got arrows to the knee eerrr wings since it couldnt get up again apparently.

aside that never saw enemies there. heard a blimp once but never saw it.
since puffs and caps are so efficient you really only need a farm with space for like 50 of em. as then you get 150 back plant 50 back down right away and get 100 each harvest in an infinite cycle. 100 is more than enough to cover all food needs the next harvest is ready long these run out.
if you need more just make a 2nd portal small farm.

havent found an island i could cultivate as of yet sadly. a small patch off shore with mistlands biome would be perfect but these are all that black rock ground so far :/ cannot grow anything there.

I put a lot of benches around my mistlands farm, until now it never has been attacked, although some benches were attacked when i portal in.
If the shrooms have grown they are not attacked by mobs.

are you guys running some massive farms with a lot of gaps in them or are these attacks designed to spawn in the air above workbench table radius ?

I have not a massive farm, itโ€˜s one with space for ~40 of each of the two mushrooms, a small hut with a portal and palisades around. And as mentioned some workbenches around it.

If there's a Gjall in the area they can destroy your mushrooms but I think you also
need to be in the area. I put my mushroom farm next to one of the magic roots
so I have sap also. A small shed with a workbench and 2 chests for storage built
into the root and double high stakewalls around about 10 mushrooms.
The portal is a short distance away in a piece of Black Forest. Just a box wood
house with a fireplace and lots of storage. I hid it under Firs because there used
to be a resident Gjall apparently patched out. Had a nice little private war
going on for awhile.

Gotta pick a good spot. Are you sure it's all Mistlands? You can plant the mushrooms
in the Black Forest (or could) but they just die. The minimap has to say Mistlands.
Plant just one to start and see what happens. It doesn't appear that the mushrooms
respawn in the wild so you have to be careful with what you have.

The Seekers don't wander around too much thankfully but if you can hear their
hissing; it's not a good place to set up a farm.

there is a gjall i hear him farting about today but yesterday he wasn't there. so maybe he dropped some fire bombs nearby but i don't think hes the culprit. i build right ont he coast near a rock with 2 dwarf rogues nearby with crossbows i thought they would help protect it. apparently not.

this was just a test run to see how it would go anyways.
