Having an open-field garbage bin - bad idea?

Hello guys, I frequently clear the surrounding of my base off enemies and stuff and digged a giant hole that is used as a garbage space. Is the mountain of loot a potential matter of concern which could affect game performance?

Like I said, I have a full chest filled with only one resource and I throw the excess away. If I need more than 1 full chest, then I'll consider diving into the toilet.

Hm, this might sound interesting. I will keep my eyes open once I find it in the crafting menu. Thank you!

You can build an obliterator and store somewhat useless (and truly useless) stuff in there. If you find that you need some of the somewhat useless stuff you can pull it back out. When the obliterator can't hold any more you can pull the "flush" handle which will turn the contents of the obliterator into a much smaller amount of coal which you can then use to smelt ore or cam be tossed into your garbage pit if you don't need to smelt anything just yet.

I'd keep the tree seeds, even if you don't use them to grow trees: much later in the game you can feed them to chickens. Seriously, they'll eat any seed and also barley (I haven't tried flax). Sure you'll run out of tree seeds eventually but it'll be nice to get a head start while building up farmed seeds.

Thor is a total bro. He can turn that pesky garage into some coal

It's a lot easier to build junk storage for surplus items. You could build a storage hut that will house 1000hrs of gameplay in less than an hour.

Personally, I don't throw anything away except early game crap, in which case I have a handy dandy world called "Trashworld".

i am very happy with a pile of loot tbh. I usually have a chest full of a particular item and everything beyond that chest will go into that toilet pile. And I dont want to travel into another trash biome or have a teleporter that leads into the toilet, I also build an appealing toilet with a dropdown to the toilet pile so the act of throwing items away feels natural.
I know some people unload their trash onto a leviathan's back or even create an entire separate world just to throw the trash away.

As of now the toilet pile consists of Dandelions, Resin, half-used Torches, wooden or stone tools, bones, tree seeds, etc

Those things are indeed mostly useless, but make sure you keep a stack or two of Dandelions, Resin, and Bones. Resin is used for boats and refueling torches, dandelions for minor healing potions, and maybe some midsommer stuff. and you will need bones again for some mistland-era crafting if you haven't gotten that far yet.

He'll have to go toilet diving for it, hehe.

As long as the loot is not within range of a workbench or other similar crafting table, the items will disappear after an hour.

If you keep playing you will discover a "trashcan" type construction.
I had two friends doing this in a area where things didn't despawn for two days straight.
They made a outdoor toilet, named it after me, adorned it with troll heads and dumped their crap in it for two days straight.
No lag!

I'll await the trashcan type construction then. Because I am never sure if I maybe later need the material for food or decoration, I am very reluctant to outright "destroy" the trash or throw it out in the ocean.

Its hard to sort through a large pile of stuff if you find you need something. You can stack chests up with basic building in a way that lets you fit 4 into a 2 meter by 1 meter area. You can also fill up carts and just leave them in an area that will let you remember what is in them (like large amounts of wood or stone). Its much easier to organize the loot that you don't want to get rid of that way. You can also organize wood, stone, and gold into piles inside your base that you can later deconstruct and use.
