I also use it for Feather gathering. Lets face it its the spear you don't have to pick up.

Harvest those sleeping gulls of an evening without shooting at them with arrows etc Same comment for less than 2* Deers. One of those might just survive the hit ad get pulled to you.

You dig a big hole. Harpoon a Troll and drag it into the hole. Build a big Coliseum around it and make a zoo.

Raid enemies will despawn. Only wondering enemies will not despawn in your zoo.

Catapult you and your friends across the map with a ramp and harpoon them sitting down. Don't forget to take your gear off before the launch!

You have to be careful about putting out straight lines like that. Lots of ornery people around willing to tell a person what they can do with their harpoon... ;-)

Be in the middle of ocean at night or during storm, I seem to always get the serpent

Harpoon also has a huge aggro radius whether you hit or miss. So if you want to draw mobs to you, e.g., up stairs or hallways, etc. throw the harpoon. Also good to isolate specific mobs and move them around, e.g., pull them into a fire, pit, etc.

A really good tool overall on top of the serpent catcher.

Toss it at the danger noodles of the sea and drag them to shore where you can do the chop-chop.

How are you guys even finding serpents in the first place? I’ve had one seed where I traveled the ocean for 20 minutes and ran into nothing but leviathan islands, and another seed where I couldn’t sail more than 100 meters without finding a serpent.

What gives?

i think it's mostly for dragging serpents somewhere better for a fight so you can get their loot. or for moving animals around.

hit a serpent with it and you can take command of your boat to drag the serpent to shore , jump off the boat and drag him up on shore for the kill ....a message will say you harpooned him and a rope will appear between you and the serpent , switch weapons and it will let go so you gotta be pretty quick , if the serpent is pulling you it will drain your stamina and the harpoon will let go , so you may need to slow the boat while dragging him , with a healthy long boat he wont destroy it quickly but likely need repairs after - ive got a whole stack of scales this way
people also use it to drag stone golems into holes but i prefer to just smash them with an iron mace

I find it fun to harpoon everything from deer to trolls.
