Valheim major update question
My friends and I recently started playing on a private server, and we're really enjoying the game. We did have one question/concern about the Mistlands update. Since a new biome is being introduced, and maps are generated at world creation, will we have to start our world over once the update drops?
I'm assuming, since character data is separate from world data, that we would keep all our character specific progress (skills/inventory), so I'm not TERRIBLY concerned if we have to start over as it shouldn't take too long to catch up, but just wanted to know what to expect. Not sure if this has been an issue that came up in previous updates or not.

He's being facetious. It's actually two years away. Just kidding it's coming March as seen by my future self. You have a year to prepare yourself till the update drops
Is it confirmed that far away still. or are you just being facetious?
Also, thanks everyone for the clarification on the biomes and how they are generated/populated. I'll let my friends know, but I don't think anyone will be venturing that far out anyway.

The game creates zones as you travel in the game world. Usually in a certain range around a character. So any zone that all players haven't been near, will be generated when a player does get near.
How those zones are generated, is determined by the world seed. So when a new zone is discovered, a calculation is executed (they use a noise system for calculation) and determined biome type then. If Mistlands, it will then be the new design
Also, they might do something with existing discovered zones. They did that with plains last time, with the introduction of tar-pits. But with a large update as expected with Mistlands, it is to be seen.

The world is generated as you explore. If no player has been to (or near) a specific Mistlands area, that area should still get the updated content! Anywhere you've already been will stay essentially the same, regardless of updates.
You are correct that your skills and inventory are stored in the character data, so you could easily just bring your current character into a new world if you can't find any untouched Mistlands :)

Normally there are already mistland zones generated in the world, just don't go to these zones before the update
but the best is simply to create a new map then create lots of chests and transfer everything from your server with your characters with your objects if you don't want to start from 0

The devs had said before that as long as you do not visit the biome, or that part of the map, it won't actually generate yet. So if you do not explore to farther islands until the update is out you will be safe.
BUT I don't know if they've made very many major changes to all the other biomes. It's possible they will be tweaking things and adding others that are requirements for new recipes so you might as well prepare to make a whole new world anyway.
