What to do with broken items?

Newbie here, only played for an hour or so.
What do I do with broken items? Can they be fixed or am I just better throwing them on the ground?
Might have a simple answer, but the birdy's tutorial has not mentioned it yet, like it's not even a problem.

I want to say I ended up with like four or five hammers before I was randomly watching a twitch streamer repair one of theirs.
I knew from the start i could repair them, i was just expecting it to cost something, and that i was not willing to pay. When i clicked the first time, and saw it was free i was like :steamhappy:

Free repairs is definitely something they've done right in this game. It removes the need to gather constantly just to repair the tools that you're using to gather stuff you're using to repair the tools that you're using to gather stuff that you're using to repair the tools... well, you get the point.

And in minecraft you can only repair for so long, till you no longer can, so i agree.

Last thing you want in a game like this is unnecessary grind - although there are some tough situations to come back from (troll destroying your house and bed for the first time!)

Would like to demolish tools for their parts as well (get some wood and stone back)
At the moment I have a pile of stone hammers thrown behind my house - because I have a flint axe now.

You can repair them at the workbench.

make a workbench, surround it with walls and put a roof above it, you can then repair all your tools there

When you're at the workbench it's that little hammer icon next to the crafting menu. Keep hitting that until everything is repaired. Doesn't cost anything.

The game is in the idea of minecraft alpha (currently). Originally Minecraft (during alpha) didn't really tell you a darn thing. You had to figure out recipes, etc.

This game does the same thing. In the spirit of exploration and self reliance you're supposed to figure things out. Many end up on forms (like you asking questions), youtube videos, twitch streamers, and the Valheim wiki walkthrough site.

You're question is also not specific. You build a hammer and if you have wood or other materials can 'mend'/'fix' various abandoned buildings. You can repair tools at the workbench, provide you build one with a hammer and the proper materials.

Well I managed to repair everything. I wondered what that hammer was there for in the UI. It just wasn't immediately obvious.

Be aware that while a workbench can repair basic items, for the more 'metallic' stuff you'll make later on you'll need a forge to repair them. Fortunately it also costs no resources to repair such items.

Later on, with portals and high durability equipment item breakage becomes less of an issue.
