MODS OR NOT? Do you even vanilla bro?
It's a great game.
It's early access.
Roadmap was pulled after a large influx of cash. (old news)
Devs can do anything they want, when they want.
Dev team is small, but I do hope the best for them & the game.
Those facts aside...
MODS keep me playing this game.
MODS that add QoL are game saving additions.
MODS that add mobs to empty biomes make me want to explore.
MODS should be watched closely by all game devs for popular ideas.
DEVS should donate dedicated MODDERS a 'coffee' or three at the very least.
To me MODS saved this game, but patches break mods?!?
(Take a shot every time you see MODS in uppercase.)

I enjoy this game with or without mods.
I love the vanilla flavor for its vanilla greatness.
I also like to add a bit of syrup on top to give it some more flavor, but again, sometimes you just want that old fashion vanilla.
I never dig to deep into mods, The stuff I add makes it more like Vanilla+, where yeah, they are nice, but I also can do without if necessary, cause I really enjoy the core game for what it is.
,,, meanwhile over in Skyrim... >_> What is core game but to be altered by mods.

Just a few non-specific un-targeted thoughts...snip...
I refrain from some early access titles if the track record of the devs is to abandon them. With Valheim it is a love hate thing....love the game, hate the prolonged 'roadmap', but this is what I signed up for when I bought in to EA....
Ogre raises several very reasonable points here. But it boils down to this: It s EA , was always declared as EA so Caveat Emptor.
The thing about all this that makes me amused, is the Threads along the lines of "they're doing nothing.. waa waa waa!"
Then we see threads like this talking about mods and the fact the updates often skew them fairly often as well. So which is it?
Are doing nothing and we HAVE to mod to extend the game or they are tinkering with it while they build a new Biome and those updates "break" the Mods...
Honestly some of the mods look very interesting but i'd hate to start a server or game relying on them as I am a very occasional and casual player then turn around and discover the Mod was down even for a short while after a Patch...
Pity about Willybachs textures apparently affected recently I was using those and or the HD pack. But tis an easy fix to restart play.
I do hope the Devs can keep an eye on what Mods are popular as others have said as its great feed back from the community. Why oh why we have no diving in the water as standard I shall never know. I have tinkered with a Mod for that and it works pretty well.
Not perfectly as occasionally you do get stuck on the shore with it. But so infrequently i'd add that in a heartbeat if I was setting up a modded server even with that minor glitch.

Just a few non-specific un-targeted thoughts...
I have a lot of fun with Valheim overall. Has there been bugs, optimization issues & frustrations?
YES.
I always take early access for what it is - sometimes fun & sometimes frustrating. When i do use mods, I fully expect someday I could lose my world & even my character from some sort of game-breaking incompatibility.
I refrain from some early access titles if the track record of the devs is to abandon them. With Valheim it is a love hate thing....love the game, hate the prolonged 'roadmap', but this is what I signed up for when I bought in to EA.
I use to mod games way back in the day - it was fun and I use to love coding. Now I don't have the time. Modders do it for the challenge and community, not so much the money & accolades. Whenever I see game devs respecting the modding community I support that dev's current & future projects more seriously. It does mean a lot when devs even shoutout your mod....so yeah you like when people like what you do, but you usually don't mod somthing thinking "everybody will love me when I am done."
Certain games I have dumped a few thousand bucks into over a period of years, in return I hope the devs can complete & maintain the game as a service as long as possible. As for spending hundreds on a game, gaming is still less expensive than many other hobbies I like.

Hey there,
please remember that as of now modding is not officially supported. It's done at your own risk, there are no guarantees for future compatibility. Mods are going to keep breaking as long as the code for the game is undergoing changes during development.
Please keep backups of your save files before you start modding. If you need technical support, please always include a full list of active AND prior mods, since that can influence the game's behaviour with regard to bugs.
Have a good day!

This business of the onus being on/expectations for devs to tread around mods and not modders to adapt to changes and updates with the game is really strange since most people involved with mods do not have that expectation unless they're not to making mods OR players who are new to using mods.
I can cite many games over the years in this regard. Ark is one easy to cite one and in that game Devs even very strongly support modders but modders have to update their mods if a game update alters/breaks something. That's the norm.
So even in the case of official support, the responsibility falls upon the moder/player to adapt to game changes be it pre or post exit from EA. *shrug*

Well, I love to mod this game, but almost every small update/patch breaks my mods...then I have wait and hope the modders are up to updating their mods if they have time...then finally fix the game and get it playable...then another forced update and they are all broken again. I am thinking of quitting until it's finished before I finish it with mods. Vanilla, I hate the textures in the game.
You know you can make a copy of your Valheim folder and place this on a HD/SDD of your choice in a folder of your choice and play the game version of your choice from said folder (if you made copies that is), without steam updating said folder.

I actually already did this, but my pre-updated copy of the game doesn't load my world save due to the cloud save changes I guess. I don't know how to fix this either.

At a guess, would need to have your saves in the old folder structure.

Since I got a "friendly" warning and my post got deleted, I will now post this with a sugar glace.
No, my friend. I do not mod (mostly). I use PlantEverything every now and then, and other than that, I prefer the vanilla game.
I hope I haven't hurt anybody's feelings by admitting to that.
I hope, my friend, that you are aware of the fact that modders and developers often hail from the same background, and that they're anything but antagonists. Developers sometimes do mods for games they like and vice versa.
Nobody is doing something to INTENTIONALLY hurt mods and their modders. They updated the engine, to fix some bugs, and mods break. That's the nature of the game, because the devs are busy now actually producing content.
Do you want them to do that or produce halfbaked mod support? Chose wisely... my friend.
No kittens got harmed while writing this post.

Agree with you on that 100%.
I'm lucky I have never had a major downtime issue, but I only use a few mods with complex dependencies or requirements. I usually script my mods to minimize bugs they can cause, some mods are just early access nightmares however.
I know this post will get mixed feedback since people are ticked about recent patches breaking/detleting their stuff.

Pure vanilla with permadeath, and often noportals. While some of the mods look interesting, until the game hits release I probably won't use any. I haven't found any QoL issues really but then again I come from a heavy turn-based roguelike and turn based tactical background and am used to far more restrictions.
