Valheim is a great game for a mature gamer such as ourselves. I don't have the reflexes I once had for sure but if you are patient and observant you can take ti all the way as a solo player. There are plenty of guide videos on You tube if you do get stuck as a solo.

Play in your own computer for a while o get the feel of it. Then if you choose look for a group hosting a server, the world you play on on your own machine is stored as a database file which can be moved from local machine to a server but I so get that may be something you don't want to fiddle with (as of yet! - its not required unless you hate the idea of a restart)

Make sure you mention that 9 out of 10 of any random people game they join will be rife with cheater trolls who will gladly kill you and take your stuff even if it has no value to them.

Agreed. If you want to try making a server and inviting friends, use a whole new world for that. BTW I think Valheim always creates a server for you even on solo play. That is why the character and world save files are separate. This is a great game for seniors like us, because it plays well with planning and preparation style just as well as quick reflex hack and slash style. For example, I always build an earthwork redoubt when I enter a new plains biome area (when you get to that part you'll know why).

the 970 do work with it, although my experience was with that graphics card together with a i7 4790k and 16 gigs ddr3 ram.

The fps wasn't great, but it was doable in standard 1080p resolution, at medium graphics setting if I recall correctly.

I will say this somewhat off-topic. DO NOT join random servers expecting to have a jolly good time.

You dont need to run a server to solo.

when you launch the game and create a world you get a choice for solo play or co-op or multiplayer.. solo you create a world and play on your own.. co-op you or another player can play together either he joins your game or you join his game. multiplayer is where everyone connects to a separate server . hope this helps

ok thanks very much for the help.i was just concerned as one of the first games i bought have servers and then when the publisher closed them down ,the game couldnt be played anymore so when i saw servers mentioned,i was just wondering if it was the same deal with this game.thanks again

On that game you mention, it sounds like servers were only a thing created by the devs and all players connected to those servers.

With Valheim, the devs don't provide servers that they run. All servers are created by the players. And it is very simple if you want to play by yourself. You just basically pick create character in the menu, then create server is just a button that says that. No nothing else to do other than giving it a name before you hit play after that.

Even playing co-op or multiplayer is just as simple, except you can add a password people need to know to access your server.

The other main difference is that games with dev runs servers are up all the time. With Valheim, if you create the game, the server is only up and running when you are playing.
