You would be better off and likely a lot quicker and easier to just 'flatten' the land you want to build on with a hoe.

Just watch any guide, it will be still way faster, and more fun in the long term.
The best advice for my was that the hoe lowers or rises the terrain to reach the level you are standing at.
So just don't move while flattening and you should be fine.

Be aware that mod like the one mentioned above or the mod that remove the Min max you can raise/lower the terrain breaks your savegame if a patch breaks the mod

Same reason i warn to use mods that raise Crate slots or Item stack sizes

The hoe levels the ground to the level you're standing on. The parts a little high can be taken down with the pickaxe.
