Valhiem's map is far to big (Traveling is way to tedious)
With the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mechanic of not being able to transport metals through portals you are forced to explore which is fine but when it takes a hour and a half to take your ♥♥♥♥ from one point to another it becomes tedious, my solution for this is making a smaller denser map so that trekking would be much easier and with the future updates in store traveling to the Far North or the Ashlands would be far les tedious this simple solution would greatly increase gameplay as instead of sailing for 5 hours to get to those locations you would only have to do it in, lets say a 30 minutes. If you have other ways of making traveling less tedious please inform the devs somehow as a community

I was more looking for an option to make your map smaller like in terraria
Create another realm and use that for a 'way station'. I have limited time to game and while I do enjoy sailing, I don't want to spend 75% of my valuable game time doing it. So let's say I loot a swamp crypt for iron and other goodies. I leave them goodies in a trunk on my secondary world, portal back to my main base and then revisit my second world to retrieve. Cheezing ? Don't care. I'm just using the mechanics available.
As for the large world size - I love it. When I have time I do enjoy going on long trips to map the world. But it's my choice when I do or don't.

Go to Thunderstore.io and look up "ExpandWorld".
It has the option to edit world size. I don't know if anyone's tried shrinking it, but I guess it could work...

I do actually see your point. I'm not a fan of spending real life hours sailing around and not finding what I'm looking for, especially when looking for the trader or looking for an accessible swamp that has crypts. I pretty much always use the map website to look it up. For the portals, I've been modding those for awhile.
I'm currently attempting a no map and no portal run just because I've done a lot of other things and am trying it out, but I'm not sure how far I will stick with it. I'm proud of myself for figuring out how to use a build piece as a compass and successfully finding the Elder, though I got lucky and it is on the starting island. Maps seems to be about 50/50 on that one. I think my chances of finding the trader are slim and none.
I realize that I most likely do not have the patience to play this game purely vanilla.
Probably your best option currently would be to look up one of those threads with suggested seeds where everything is positioned better. Make sure it's post-mistlands when you do.

Sorry to offend anyone I did not mean to sound distasteful towards the game this is just my opinion and a shared opinion in my friend group if you like a big map that's fine, but I don't have a hour and a half of freetime to sail to one point on the map to the other rather than engaging in the good gameplay like exploring on land or fighting on land( plus one and a half hours is not good with the fastest boat)

If you don't like sailing the seas, you can use server jump technique: Sorry to offend anyone I did not mean to sound distasteful towards the game this is just my opinion and a shared opinion in my friend group if you like a big map that's fine, but I don't have a hour and a half of freetime to sail to one point on the map to the other rather than engaging in the good gameplay like exploring on land or fighting on land( plus one and a half hours is not good with the fastest boat)
create another world, call it "transfer", mine as much as you can and fill up your inventory. Leave your primary world->>join "transfer"->>build few chests and unload iron/ore/Dragon Eggs->>go back to your world->>teleport to required destination ->>log into "transfer", pick up your stuff->>log into main world.
Mission accomplished, it will take +\- 5 min

You aren't required to travel more than just the first time. You can take what you need in the way of refined metals with you on the ship the first time you sail to a new biome and build a base in that biome to refine the metals. Set up a portal in the new base and you can move any thing else that you want through the portal.

You sure can, or you can sail the seas plundering all the valuables and bring them back to your base after a hard journey across the seas and sit down with an ale, then get back to work smelting and crafting for the next week You aren't required to travel more than just the first time. 1 and half hours ??? 5 hours to get to Ashlands??? It takes like about one in-game day to get to the edge of the map. maybe you need to play with the sailing mechanics a bit more

What if you just like building and are happy to spend a 1000 hours on one play thru?
I cannot wait for the turn portals off setting!
OK, how about if they give us a faster boat?

one of their recent updates stated they will enable you to change up gameplay settings, including allowing metals through the portals.
and hell, its not like theres already several mods that let you do this and much more. *sarcasm*

There's already a few (non-mod) options for playing without portals. What if you just like building and are happy to spend a 1000 hours on one play thru?

Use the "noportals" command. This will allow you to build but not use portals.
Or just don't build portals.
