I came up with a really good ides one day.I would kill myself ten times to get ten gravestones for all the extra storage.Well it was a great plan and after over 100hrs playing you would think i would have realised this. Each death is I think -2 lvls per.I have been playing all this time not aware of the exp penalty, yep I blame it on old age .
But anyway I would like to advise against doing this :).

It is a wonderful tool if you have the sense to 1) find a suitable location quickly and stick to that location and 2) you never noob it up and take all your stuff (deletes the body). A bit of smoke inhalation and fire gets it done efficiently.
1) is what gets me. Its really rare to have a good spot before you gain enough skills to not want to do it anymore.

Well, you can just make a new death character to create the storages for you, then you don't have to sacrifice your main character skill progression.
I don't know if they block enemy pathing but if they do you can surround your base with them for a morbid protection wall.

The worst part is if your inventory has enough space for everything in the grave you'll just auto grab all of it and destroy the grave anyway.
Hmm, any mods for buildable gravestones with settable text?

Like... James Woods, Sharon Stone etc... :D On that note, you could name said temporary characters things like wood, stone, hides, etc.

Depends on aesthetic a player is going for I spose, I've never done it myself but I mean if you wanted to get creative and make a heap of characters named with labels you want for a storage containers and then just bring em in the world to just kill and leave a grave stone behind. It is a very big free storage container but yeah you just gotta remember to never remove everything from it.

The corpse run effect also buffs your character in other ways, but I don't think it's worth killing your skill progression. Doing it for free storage space is even worse idea.
Trying to cheese things too hard is exactly why nice game developers introduce features like death penalties, flying enemies, give enemies huge pickaxe and chop damage even when they don't actually deal too much damage, and so on.

It drains 5% not 10%, it's confirmed on wiki and No Drain Skill buff lasts 10 minutes Death takes 10% of your current level, and there's a No Death Penalty buff you get for a short time. If you do this early, your skill loss will be minimal.

And the no skill drain refreshes every time you die so if you really want to kill yourself like crazy for free storage, obviously you must hold atleast one time to create a gravestone though and never have the gravestone be empty or else it disappears.

And why would there ever be the "need" for free storage. Common a chest costs 10 wood...I never ever felt the slightest "need" to find a way to get free storage...

If you do this early game before you gain skill points, and also die again during the no skill drain buff, this mechanic will work well.
Personally, i like the chest storage system with all of my chests labeled.
the only reason to leave gravestones imo would be to create a cemetery... this works better when there are different names on each stone. If you are playing single player world, you can create characters just to have them die in your cemetery and then delete the characters after logging them off your world.
On that note, you could name said temporary characters things like wood, stone, hides, etc.

The gravestone storage is a mixed blessing. Yes, it's a permanent storage which in itself can be handy as a depot. Plus its a container the monsters ignore.
It's just that -- call me superstitious, and I probably am -- I get the feeling that adds to lag. If there's too many of them, I imagine that affects performance.
But as for death level penalty -- yeah, it drains your points. I hate it but I also recognize its a needed mechanic. If death comes without penalty, there's no excitement or risk. Death should be avoided, if nothing else, because of the point of the plot. Odin is testing you as the mightiest warrior, and getting killed all the time doesn't make a strong case.
