So... do items in the world eventually de-spawn or not?

I'm sure this is a common question, but I have seen somewhat contradictory answers. If I leave an item drop out in the world, does the game eventually de-spawn/delete that item or does it exist forever? If it exists forever, won't this cause tremendous lag and load issues once your world gets past 100+ hours played and whatnot? Seems like it could be quite a problem.

I hope there's an end game stat or achievement for the amount of trash you've dumped into the ocean. Odin is watching!

I don't think chopped trees that have fallen over but not yet been reduced to wood that can be picked up despawn.

No. Only items that have the sparkly indicator. Stuff you can add to your inventory.

I don't know how your search led you to "somewhat contradictory" answers. This question is asked extremely frequently and every time the answer is "yes, outside the range of a workbench". You don't need to dig a hole or throw things into the ocean.

Since I always build my settlements directly on the coast, I find a spot where the water drops of suddenly and build a platform that overlaps the water a bit and use that as a dumping spot for all my junk. It works great since the stuff goes so deep into the water you never really see it again.

They will also, but its so plentiful, don't sweat it....
One thing some have said causes lag are stumps, so i always clear them. Somebody may know if that's true or not.

I also clear stumps. It's strange though that regardless of what type of tree you have cut down, the stump never gives anything but the base wood.

You just need to drop things you want to disappear out of range of any workbench or forge. They'll eventually disappear after some time.

They do indeed despawn if dropped out of range of a 'claim' item (like workbenches, fires, forges, etc...there's a bunch of items fall into this category that prevent enemy spawn / item despawn...check Wiki for more info).

It does take a couple of in game days for them to go away though (about 80 RL minutes).

Dropped items outside of workbench radius despawn within about 2-3 game days. Items dropped into 2m or deeper water despawn within a much shorter period, and will do so even in workbench range.
