I don't like the cart.

Hot take, I know. But I just tried it out in game, and it sucks. It slows me way down, it gets stuck on every tiny tree from my home to the Black Forest, and it flips over far too easily. It also was almost broken by the time I got it back home. Agree, disagree?

This here is the answer.

Roads are almost mandatory for comfortable cart usage. And as also mentioned leveling your run skill helps too.

Also, the cart can lead into hilarious situations. One of the best times we had on our server was when three of us tried to get a cart full of silver ore from the top of a mountain back to our base. Just getting it down the mountain in one piece was funny as hell.
And then when we ended up realising that the premade path we had going, from the base of the mountain through a black forest to our base, wasn't good enough it ended up with one of us trying to pull the cart along while two of us did our best to widen and even out the path infront.

It took a whole in game day but the amount of laughs that were had made it well worth it.

Build roads to areas near where you will grind, not to the spot, so you just have to get out the area to a road then its clear all the way to the base.
Its a pain but once you have some roads it makes it easier to clean out areas and have a fast run home.

Mostly agree - I really don't like how the cart becomes immovable if it becomes too heavy. I think a solution would be to introduce a higher tier type of cart, one that doesn't slow down (or nearly as much) when piling it full of heavy items. The material could even be purchased from the trader. I hope the devs consider this.

I'm curious how the effort of making a road compares to the effort of making multiple trips without the cart. I don't use the cart either. It would be cool if we could harness the lox to it, however.

Think of it in real life. Heavy wooden cart, one human, hauling up to a ton of material through old growth forests? Yeah, you wouldn't make it far even if you were trained doing it your whole life. Sucks it isn't perfect though, right?

I dunno, I just didn't expect to have to do major road construction work before I started. Better get my hardhat. I guess Valheim really does make you think about every action you take.

Been there, done that...

Unless you just want roads to fancy up the place I just found stuff easier to run or portal.
Portal is much faster for the common stuff like rock and wood.
For ore the Black Forest just isn't worth the road investment to me.

The only place I could see it being useful is in the swamps since you can make a road fairly easily just with a hoe... but even then I never bothered and just ran the iron out.

One of the better uses might be to have it at a tree farm in the meadows to collect the harvest and bring it to the portal. Also used them in a portal hub to transfer between portals, but all those places had stone floors.

I've read somewhere that your friends can pull you with Abyssal Harpoon. But i don't know if that actually works.

It takes some getting used to, for sure.
  • don't fill it more than halfway with ore (wood is fine)
  • level your run skill
  • use Eikthyr power
  • consider building a road
  • slap down workbenches when necessary for a quick repair

With enough points in run the cart will barely slow you down
