They actually don't starve. I've had about 30+ wolves under the floor of a building I built about 200 in-game days ago and haven't fed them once.

Feeding them lets them heal HP and procreate if possible.

As far as I know, no animal can starve. I have many pens in different locations, some older, no mass extinction yet
what DOES happen is, that some animals clip out of the pen and then get killed, i have double walls for that.
or that mobs are spawning nearby and kill your animals
if there is loot they got killed
if there is not the maybe clipped out
also oozer aoe dmg kills through thick walls

Are you progressing Mountains currently? A drake event seems like the best explanation for this.

I haven't killed a boss yet. Still in 1st island

Maybe it's a clipping issue then. With my wolves around, no mobs should be able to kill my boars in their pen.
