Help with Terracing?

So, now I'm getting assaulted by multiple trolls, skeletons, draugr and so on (with wolf packs due Real Soon Now), I decided to rebuild my homely little dock-house into a proper, full-on stone castle. It's always nice to have a slightly creative side-project to distract from the grind ...

And it's looking pretty good IMHO ... except inside where the ground climbs at a precipitous rate from coast to land-side entrance.

So, terraces then ... except I'm having immense trouble creating the flat earth behind each terrace wall. The problem is that neither the hoe nor pickaxe seem to understand what walls are and their effects pass to the other side of the wall. If I use raise ground (which uses stones so I guess I'm dumping stones where I want the ground to be higher) it also dumps earth on the other side of the wall. If I level on one side of the wall, it affects the level on the other side too. If I use my pickaxe to remove surplus soil that's been dumped on the wrong side, it also takes soil away from the other side ...

I am going. Slightly. Insane.

Any tips, kind people?

Aye, the grid that terraforming works to is pretty low resolution compared to the building pieces. Sounds like it's a bit late to move the building to line up, so your only solution is much thicker walls.

I only do walls after the ground has first been prepared
I learned this the hard way after trying to do them for the first time (pictured below)

This was the result after i realised you need to flatten everything then raise.
I know it isn't perfect but trust me this wall stops everything early

With flattening i find that if a spot remains persistently high or low it means you need to pick or raise it respectively then continue with the levelling.

Also it levels the ground to match where you are standing, so i usually get one spot right where i want it then flatten as much around it to that level as i can before moving.

When it comes to stopping "dirt bleed" it takes precise pickaxeing/ground raise, this will come with time as you use these mechanics more.

Hope that helps!

I learned that the hard way too!

Does this apply to working with stone walls? Ground levels on the two sides of a stone wall can be managed effectively ... if I keep on practising <groan>?

The actual castle walls are fine; the buildings (all down at the coastline level) are fine. It's just what I do about the substantial difference of levels between the two that's giving me a headache. I wanted to take up virtual gardening but ...

I'm on the verge of doing the equivalent of concreting over the lawn because it's too much trouble to mow. At least then I'd have useful space for additional buildings!

If you have the patience & resources, try to double layer stone walls to counter the dirt clipping through the side of the inner wall, wood walls are way too thin for it not to clip through it. So one (inner layer stone wall for what ever you build) second layer makes up the slope difference in the dirt, and then when you raise ground on the outside edge of the second layered wall (outer wall, but placed next to the inner wall) the slope of the dirt would essentially be hidden, and will also reinforce with strong foundation (blue) colour.

tldr some photos of what you are building might help.

Yeah, I can relate.
Flatten the soil in this game is never easy, I'm also having trouble with this too but haven't got any tips or tricks to make it work.
So maybe I can find some answer in this discussion.
