It Finally Happened

I have my carrot "farm" operation in the black forest about 150 yards from the base there. My reasoning was that I wanted to keep the area near my base as natural as possible. The small fir trees, moss covered rocks and sloped terrain towards the beach.

Well I can hardly pull or plant a carrot seed without a greydrwave interrupting me. I have the carrots in a pit but I keep the ground sloped for the size of a doorway. Even if I blocked it all off, they would just throw rocks at me. One after the other. Interruptions are every 20 to 20 seconds. It is maddening and I am flipping out. haha

I decided to fence off the beach area just outside my base gate. I know they will throw rocks at the fence and swim around the fence. My harbor fence only gets 2 swimmers at most and they don't enter often, they also attack the fence. I think I can deal with that. I can only let them hit me in the garden so long and then when I stop my carrot row is off. :P

I won't level the ground there, just remove rocks. I have neglected food gathering, partly because of this, but mostly been exploring and building 3 new outposts here and there. Running out of my stock of food literally. All I do is cut wood, build, eat and kill pesky greydwarves.

I have a deck on 2nd level , wish I could cover it with dirt and plant that in peace.

Something nifty I just recently discovered was I can build a fence on top of wood walls. That kept the stupid greydwarves out and let me grow my turnips in peace. I also built portals all around the inside just because I like fast travel, and my portals are completely safe now, at least on the fort side. If ever want to expand it, all it'll take it building a workbench or two. Works great, though it's in the Meadows. I didn't want trolls coming by.

i possible make double stone walls - to prevent spawning greydwarf shamans poison breath from reaching the carrots

also you can hide workbenches inside the walls for easy repairs and spawn prevention

i also encourage buiding sharp stakes around it

and most important: make sure now troll is spawning in the area

Moats. Dig moats around your base, then build a bridge across, but don't connect it. This way you can simply jump back and forth and they can't get in.

Also build your wall two high and they can't hit you with rocks. That or simply dig the moat wide enough they can't throw them far enough to hit you.
