Why is development so slow?

This question just popped out when I read the updates so far. I'm just curious. Is it because of corona?

They are now a team of 13, I think by the time of the Steam Early Access launch, they already were 5. I think they said they want to keep the studio small.

From what one of the devs commented here a while back, most of the team are regular employees, e.g. they are not chilling in their supercars. A huge part of the money left after taxes, publisher, and Steam is apparently in the bank to make sure they can support their studio for a good long while.

Feel free to correct me, or add to that. These are my personal recollections, not a statement from IG.

The one thing I would add is that at least one person on the team that is a modeler had to be re-trained over 3 months to use Blender, this was in the IGS video of them making the bunny or whatever.

I didn't know the backstory yet, so that was quite interesting. Thanks for pointing it out. To be honest, I'm not quite sure whether I should buy it now or wait for the next update first. Apparently, each update would take about a year, so the next earliest update would be somewhere in 2023. Depending on how much they want to put into this game, it might take a very long time to release a finished product, I guess.

There's plenty of content to enjoy the game for hundreds of hours in the state it's currently in. Better online with friends.

If you have other stuff on your plate that you can enjoy, why not just wait till Mistlands releases?

If you have nothing else, why not just buy the game and enjoy it? It's cheap and provides, as said above, hundreds of hours of entertainment already.

That is, if you're not specifically looking for a pure action title. That, Valheim is not.

Been playing it over and over, who needs new content to keep enjoying it? Just make a new character and world and go around again. Every one is different.

You answered yourself. Everyone is different, some people can enjoy the same/similar experience over and over, some, cannot.

Development is so slow because the devs behind the game already got more huge of a payout than they could have ever dreamed of. They didn't attempt to advertise the game or anything, it just happened to become a massive fad out of the blue like Among Us did.

If you were part of a small indie dev team working tirelessly on a game and suddenly your game took off and you had millions of dollars in your pocket in less than a month without the game even being finish, would you still want to develop the game? Or would you rather enjoy life with your newfound wealth?

This is the reason pretty much every "early access" title is a complete scam. Minecraft popularized the idea a long time ago and since then it has been rarely ever used for it's intended purpose. Indie teams make an interesting game and tons of promises for what it'll be to rake in as much cash as possible. Using the idea of "early access" to constantly make excuses for why the game will never be finished.

Because the Dev's are trolling us, hoping this question pops up 100 time a day.

Only then they're going to release new content.

So keep spamming!

There is basically one person who does the main coding.

The game was his vision/dream.

This may limit how fast they can get things done. But the popularity of the game made them basically step back and work on bugs and player suggestions.

Although this has considerably slowed down expansion of the game, they have taken the time to make a solid framework <and still working on it to make it better>... so there is a solid foundation to build / balance the rest of the content when it comes.

While covid did play some part in slowing things down I don't really think it is as big a factor as it just being a small team. And no matter how much money they made you just can't throw people in that have the same vision for the game.. keeping a small team means they can keep the quality up where they want it to be.

What they have done so far is really brilliant honestly. Nothing ground breaking in of itself but How they did everything is what makes it. People talk about clones coming along to take advantage of its popularity but so many have already come and failed hard its funny.

The Swedes play a good game. They won this one.I want them to finish the game so I can mod the hell out of it. The mod community is the best part of this whole game industry and I think Valhiem will be a good game eventually.Does it really take a year to add a mug to the game? Valhiem citizen anyone ?

People at Game Developers Conference want to know the same thing, but here all you will get is people who are either annoyed by the progress, or content with what they have.

Usually last months of Summer are the time for breaks and vacations. People deserve some rest from time to time :)
But I agree - it would be nice to at least have approximate timeframe when the devs would plan to release mistlands :sans:

The charitable answer to this question is that the game had a plenty of technological debt at the time of release that had to be repaid before they could move on with the development. A big portion of the original game was basically made by one person.

Its not easy to grow a tiny studio, hire a lot new people while keeping the creative juices flowing. By far most of the people working on the game today did not participate in the original release version back in 2021. Getting things back on track can take some time. Hopefully rest of the development will go smoother and the full game will still release in a couple of years time.

Because good games like this takes time. The creators probably got burned out and the fans pushing them makes it even worse.
