Oh, but it is... oh yes, it is...

Try to survive outside of Meadows without food. If you manage that, you have my nod of approval.

Edit: Ok, I think I need to explain this in more detail:
1. You cannot die of thirst and hunger.
2. That said, food is your most important asset in this game, as your health and stamina is solely dependent on it. Armor helps for sure, but is secondary.
3. No food, you're dead in anything but Meadows, maybe Black Forest.
4. There's three different types of food, to underscore the importance of food in Valheim.
-a) Health food, which gives a lot of boost to health, and very little to stamina.
-b) Mix food, which gives a middling boost to both.
-c) Stamina food, which gives a... ahem... healthy boost to stamina.
5. You need health to survive and heal yourself. More health, more chances for survival. Simple.
6. You need stamina to fight, block and run. And build. And jump. And swim... Did I forget fight? Anyway. You want it.
7. Food helps you to heal. As there is no natural heal.

but you dont need to eat, it helps a lot to eat as food buffs you in an insane manner, but you wont die if you forget to eat... its a 50/50 you dont need food, but it buffs you so much you need to eat to progress.
Think of food as a HP and Stamina buff, you wont die without but the buffs are good.

No, not really. I am sure someone will come along and do it with no mods as a challenge, but I would die every few min from falling or something and boss fights would be brutal. Remember that food = healing too, so not only 25 health but you won't heal up if you take any damage at all, so eventually you die from micro falls or smoke gusts or whatnot.

what about food is a problem for you? You can get by without massive gathering sessions or gigantic farmlands. A small farm and pick up what you get 'naturally' by playing is all you need, and a few min once in a while to assemble it all.

Food isn't really a big issue to keep up on in the game, especially early as basic forage stuff is everywhere. Farming for one person is fairly easy since you progress fast enough not to need to stock up on any one item too much.

A lot of stuff is foraged/hunted as well so you collect it as you go and get attacked.
You don't really have to go out of your way to get "some" food. It just falls into your inventory.. then as things progress you will need to combine and or cook stuff to get better results.

Edit - my assumption is OP has never played since no mouse icon so just providing food basic information.

Edit edit add - Stamina management is important in this game and stamina/health are tied to food not player level. The game difficulty is designed around the food system.
So minimal food or just foraged food would not be easy.

Yes, you'll just only have 25 health.

Either use mods like Valheim Plus, where you can adjust the food variable of the game, or as Cat Loafer said, simply don't eat. Your health and stamina will always be low.

The food system and stat decay are one thing I wish they'd rework in the game.

By that, I mean food duration. I'm in the Plains on my current character, using Serpent Stew, Lox Meat Pies, and Blood Pudding (?). All three last 30 minutes, and it's great.

Having a bunch of foods with mismatched durations is just annoying, especially paired with the stat decay involved. I believe it's the.. Turnip? stage of food where it gets REALLY annoying.

All foods should last 30 minutes in my opinion, with decay only happening the last 10 minutes or so; maybe even rapidly happening at 5 minutes left.

Edit: also, farming. They really need to make farming easier.. planting specifically. I know there's grid-related mods for this, but I feel no need to mod the game in its current state. They could simply add an upgrade for the Hoe that allows for this in-game for mass planting. Would be great.

Haven't tried it but by far the toughest challenge would be not using any food. It could be done, not dying would be very difficult. The stamina limitations would make everything very hard.

I think I'd instead limit myself to stamina food, some new game down the road. So low health, potential 1-shot, but can build and run around same as always.
