hold the torch and they will stay away. hit them with the torch to kill.

Greydwarves don't spawn in meadows biome unless it's night. You may see graylings but they can be beaten even with your fists. Or just run away from them while gathering something more useable, they might quickly fall behind.

It was in the middle of the day. I didn't actually know whether the spawn was really close to a Black Forest biome, though. Or whether that's even possible.

Was there a patch of black forest nearby? Occasionally it can get uncomfortably close to spawn. I once had a troll hanging out within view of the spawn point. Another map might fix it.

Oh yeah. Had the spawn be real near the Black Forest a few times and they decide they want some fresh meat early. Got my parry game going strong though thanks to that.

Oof. I remember Solace Crafting seemingly solving the problem by having a circular area around the starting point definitely be the Meadows.
